for small collar buttons (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I am wondering about making small buttonholes for the little buttons on collars? It looks like my templates are all a bit too large. Those of you who are using an attachment what do you do for these small buttons? Thank You!

Mine is a zig-zag version, and there are templates small enough. You'd have to play with zig-zag width and make the cutting area the smallest possible to make it work. Honestly, I'd probably just resort to my 4-step bartack buttonholes on a man's shirt, though.

Perhaps your buttonhole attachment is incomplete. Who made it, and what's the model number?

Are you talking about the old style vintage buttonholer attachments? The ones I've used come with four cams and the smallest is 5/16". I know you can get additional cams but I don't know what those sizes are except that one of them is an eyelet. I'd like to have that cam set myself, but they're not easy to find!

Yes, that is what I am talking about the older buttonhole attachment. I am trying to figure out the buttonholes for the end of collars where they button to the shirt. I do not have template small enough.
I know someone mentioned doing buttonhole with zig zag stitch....I do not know how to do that. I am using straight stitch machine mostly.
I could use Hello Kitty she has 2 size of zig zag...but how to do it?
I was wondering if there was a set of smaller templates. ....
Maybe someone could share where they get them at? .....????
(hopefully not Ebay, I have not had good luck with them lately...sigh)

Well....
As usual I got curious and tried to find where I have seen the extra template set. I found several template sets on eBay but none of them had a cam smaller than 5/16". The eyelet is the one I'd like to have and it didn't come with any of the set I found but CHECK THIS OUT!
OMG! Okay, I'll make my eyelets by hand, thank you very much! ;)
And just another observation, not really relevant to your problem, I saw some buttonhole attachments that were advertised "for Featherweights". However, I just bought a FW and slapped my regular Singer buttonholer (in the green, plastic case) on there and it worked fine. Ditto the standard Singer zig zag attachment. So what's up with this "Featherweight Buttonholer" thing????

What are they nuts for that price?!!!

Yes, I have the one in the green box & one in pink shell case too.
What is a source for hand done buttonholes that may be done small? I may have to wait til I get a bit better with my hands...but if I knew how to do it maybe that is an answer for these little ones. ....Grandma showed me to use overcast stitch & straight stitch around buttonhole by hand ...I never really like the way mine come out though. ...
Thank you for checking that out!

That is insane - right???
But somewhere I have seen a SET that included the eyelet. Should've bookmarked it because now I can't find it. Drat!
Oh, I just started a new thread for vintage attachments - my new "sub-hobby"! See ya there! ;)
PS...I never made a buttonhole by hand. I "know" how to do it theoretically but I've never actually done it!

I use a Singer "famous"-style buttonholer for making buttonholes on shirts. It doesn't require templates, and you can make the buttonholes quite thin and short. You have to use wash-away stabilizer on top, or sometimes it will skip stitches.
However, I'm not sure that it makes buttonholes that are shorter than 5/16" either. I've never made shirts with button-down collars, so I couldn't say what would be appropriate for this sort of thing. I don't think the eyelet template will help either because it creates a round hole, not a buttonhole.
I'm certainly not beneath dragging out the computerized Elna. It makes great buttonholes, and if I need a different style or size for a particular project, I will do just that — in fact, that's about all I use it for anymore.

I looked up David Coffin's Shirtmaking on Amazon and found the following:
------
Quote:
Button-down collar buttons are 5/16 inch in diameter, what the buttonmaker calls 14L, or line 14. Standard front buttons are 3/8 inch. (16L or 18L). Cuff buttons can be 20L, which equals 1/2 inch.
