...after 3 weeks in my new job! (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 2/25/11 10:17 PM ET
Help! I dropped 15 pounds this winter, and since starting my new job, I've gained almost half of it back.
I went from working on a very busy cardiac unit (i.e., running my @$$ off all day) to working in an office (i.e., sitting on my @$$ all day). There's always junk food around -- a doctor brought us cupcakes for Valentine's Day, and there's a jar of candy behind the desk, and drug reps and other vendors are always bringing us food.
I need to just start saying "no" to the junk, and I'm planning to go back to a stricter low-carb/high-protein diet. I'm also forcing myself to find time for a workout at least 4 days a week -- no excuses! But how do those of you who work in offices keep your weight under control?

Once you get the carbs and sugar out of your system, which should take about 3 days of going cold turkey, the cravings will go away. You will be able to resist the goodies after your stores of glycogen is depleted. Expect to feel cranky and sick like you're going through withdrawls, because well you are. Stick with it and things will get much easier. Good luck.

Make sure you eat a full healthy breakfast and healthy snacks/lunch through the day. It's twice as hard to say no to a cupcake if you are hungry!

Is your office in a building with multiple stories? If so, use the stairs, not the elevator. Mid morning, lunch time and mid afternoon, take a quick walk up and down the stairs.
And, like you said, keep your mitts off the yummies that surround you.

Since most people need to eat about every 3 hours bring the food to work that you want to eat. You won't be as tempted to eat what happens to be in the break room when you get hungry.
You can easily socialize with your co-workers while you eat your fruit or string cheese and they eat their cupcakes.
I have been a nutritionist/nutrition counselor for about 30 years. I've made many observations in regards to eating behavior and food choices. It seems like the "treat" or "forbidden" aspect of food really makes those sweets and high fat items desirable. If you think of the donut or candy as something you can have anytime or eat later you may have an easier time passing on it right now. Most commercial bakery products are so-so at best.
If someone brings something to work that is one of your favorite foods (homemade pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting was that food for me this week) just have some and enjoy every bite.
I read about a study where office workers were much less likely to eat candy from a covered and opaque dish. Maybe you could bring a decorative tin from home and put the chocolates in it. Crazy, but it does work.
Good luck. It's too much work to lose weight and get back in shape. I hope you are able to find a solution and stay in good health.

Congratulations on the new job.
I agree w/ Sherril, don't eat any of that junk for just a little bit. Then, per Barb's point (who knows a lot more than I do about this stuff), you can go back to eating just little bits.
Healthy snacks. Very important. Some people don't need to eat between meals, some do. If you do, bring stuff to eat. It doesn't have to be traditional snack food, either. It can be a mini-lunch. Soup at 10 AM? Sure, why not!
And don't fear carbs - complex carbs, that is. Carbs get a bad rap because they have some shady characters in the family. Sure, cake is carbs, but so are a sweet potato, peas, and whole grain oatmeal.
Good for you for catching this now & wanting to act.

This probably sounds dumb, but what enabled me to stabilize my weight, and actually lost a few pounds, was buying a very good scale, with pounds and ounces on it.
I weigh myself every morning and now know that I naturally fluctuate up or down a pound or two. And I've also found out things about my metabolism--if it's better for me to eat often, or when to eat, what kind of things seem to put weight on, etc.
I think we're all different, and you need to find out what is putting the weight on you. Really, that scale has been a real eye-opener to me.
Hey, good luck! Thanks for being a nurse.

Eat a good high protein breakfast in the morning. Also bring 1/2 sandwich, oatmeal or even a frozen dinner for a morning snack. There is NO way I will ever be able to go more than 3 hours in the morning without eating. I can go longer in the afternoon. My problem is all the yummy baked gooodies my coworkers bring in. The table is 3 ft from my desk. Having the better choices really makes the difference.

I totally agree, except I'd say "once you get the empty carbs, sugar, and excess salt out of your system"... There's nothing at all wrong with carbs -- it's the junk carbs that pollute people's systems. Also the hidden (or not so hidden) sugar and salt in processed food. You really will stop feeling the need for most processed food and junk food once you've cleared this non-essential stuff out of your system. That's not to say that occasionally you won't want a bit of chocolate or a burrito or whatever. But healthy food is just as addictive as processed, not-so-healthy food, if you let yourself really get used to living mostly on healthy food.
