I lost a button hole template pattern piece for a toddler boys short sleeved buttoned down shirt that I am making for a friend. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I would just buy another pattern but they are all out of that pattern and I need it ASAP.

Mark where you want the top and bottom buttons to be, and then space out the required number of buttons evenly.

As above, mark where you want your top and bottom buttons. If you want 5 buttonholes, place one where you fold it in half matching the 2 marked positions. That gives you 3. Then fold each half in half and mark those folds to give you a total of five buttonhole locations. You could do this on a paper (template) first and then mark on the fabric.

Or just measure the distance between the 2 end buttonholes and divide by 4. Measure that length to get 3 positions for 3 buttonholes.

The horizontal buttonholes would extend just outside the center front line, maybe 1/8 or 1/16 inch so the button would line up down the front.

If you're not confident about deciding on placement yourself, grab a similar shirt from your little boy's wardrobe and transfer the button placement from that. :)

I draft a lot of my own patterns, so I invested in a Simflex expanding gauge:

That Simflex expanding gauge is a good idea, I agree!

Also, an odd number of buttons, for some reason, looks better than an even number.
