Hi,
Please tell me if energy drinks are exactly that... I see the commericals on TV and thinking maybe this is what I need. It seems that after dinner I am totally drained. My mind wants to get busy and do things, (sm staring at me) but I don't have the energy. If I plop on the sofa to watch TV I am out like a light,(DH can vouch for that) and if I go on the computer I find I am dozing off too. What the heck is going on???? So if there is a brand energy drink that you are happy with please, please let me know. Do they have an after taste??? Oh how I don't like after taste.
Many thanks, Cheryl
P.S. If we have already covered this topic I do apologize...

You don't need to drink calories unless you are working out for such a sustained, strenuous time that you will run out of fuel before the end. Marathon runners need goo and energy drinks (while they're running), normal people do not.
Most "energy" drinks are just sugar plus electrolytes (plus artificial colors and flavors). I have also seen advertisements for energy concoctions whose main ingredient is caffeine. You can get caffeine cheaper than in an energy drink, and you may not want it after dinner!

I know for me limiting my sugar and dairy and eating mostly whole foods takes care of most of the blood sugar slump that zaps my energy. If you're into juicing, carrot orange or carrot apple is about the most head clearing thing I've ever consumed.

I looked up Lucozade. It contains sugar, caffeine, various preservatives and colour. And 266 calories per 380ml bottle!
I own up, I've never tried an energy drink. I agree with nicegirl; unless you're doing something very strenuous you shouldn't need it. Have you tried to work out why you're tired and tried to treat the underlying cause? Perhaps diet or exercise? Are you sleeping well, and/or getting enough sleep? If your dinner is heavy, that could be a cause. Many people have a 'slump' after a heavy lunch or dinner. The tiredness could be completely natural; if you have an active day, it's normal to be shattered in the evenings!
It can take a while to twig what's wrong, if anything is; I haven't got it right yet. Sometimes I think that we demand too much of ourselves.
I've found that as long as I don't stop and relax in the evening, I can get things done. As soon as I sit down and take a break (e.g. relaxing over dinner), I can't do anything else of any use and just lie there like a bag of potatoes.

Not only are most just caffeine/sugar, they taste awful as well.
Do you work out? I know, for me, a hard workout makes me sleep better, so I have more energy the next day.

Most are just sugar water. You'd be better off eating a true serving of fruit which equals a small orange, apple or banana half. Your getting fiber, water and nutrients from the source.
Also, make sure you are not dehydrated. That can exhibit through exhaustion.

I can tell you they have been banned in schools because of the sugar content- and as to the truth of "energy" I think you'd do better with a cup of coffee.

Also if you're drinking one high in caffeine, remember that caffeine is a diuretic, which makes you loose fluid (i.e., makes you pee), and being sleepy is sometimes a symptom of dehydration.

I remember going on a food combining diet a while back. You do not eat sugar or caffine and you do not combine protein with whole grains. You can have fruit on an emptly stomach. When I was on this diet I had so much energy. I think a lot has to do with no sugar and no caffine.

Being a former long distance runner, I relied on things like Gatorade, etc., to help me finish. These drinks have lots of salt and sugar in them, and I wouldn't even dare try them after dinner, etc., now. If you need energy, such as throughout the day, may I suggest Vitamin B12? You can get it in a tablet form, or your doctor can give you a shot of it. 250 to 500 mg to start would be fine. Runners use B12 for endurance, but it doesn't have the sugar dump that energy drinks do. You might want to have your adrenals checked (through a saliva test) before you do, because this might also be causing the problem.
