Hello,

I'm making a wedding dress and the bride will be getting married in the USA and travelling by plane from the UK.

She doesn't want to put the dress in the hold in case it gets put on the wrong plane so does anyone have any ideas of how to pack the dress so she can take it on to the plane with her and it won't get crinkled.

The dress is tea length and doesn't have a train so it's not that bulky but I don't want the fabric to be crushed (it's being made from duppion).

We did think a suit bag might work if it can be hung somewhere in the plane but does anyone have any other ideas?

I am hoping someone with experience jumps in. I think wrapping and stuffing with lots of tissue paper and having only that dress in the bag?

Call the airline and see if they can hang a garment bag for you. I have travelled with a garment bag as a carry-on before and they hung it in the little closet that the pilots use for their garment bags.

I flew with mine years ago. Not a big deal. Just have the attendants hang up in first class (called business class now). They hang all coats and jackets of those passengers.

Just don't forget to retrieve at end of flight.

Thanks for the replies. I'll tell her to phone the airline in advance and hopefully they will hang it in first class for her! That seems the most sensible thing to do.

I'll just make sure I have a garment bag wide enough so the skirt doesn't have to be folded.

Even if you find a wide garment bag, the hanging space on the plane will be designed to fit a standard garment bag.

My experience with airline service is not nearly good as others here, so I didn't want to risk having a garment bag smashed in the overhead, gate checked or otherwise. Also, the dress and garment bag were both longer than the closets are tall, so it wouldn't have been wrinkle free. I decided to stuff the bodice, wrap the whole dress in a sheet, and then pack it in a carryon bag of its own, using a clear bag to line the carryon in case of surprise liquids coming out of someone else's carryon. I checked a handheld steamer, hanger, and garment bag for use after I arrived at the destination. it worked great!

Nylon tulle is dirt cheap. Stuff the bodice and sleeves with yards of tulle, and wad a couple of layers of tulle under the skirt, and over the skirt, then hang it in a garment bag.

Even if the garment bag is folded in half, the springiness of the tulle will foil the worst wrinkles. Just hang the stuffed dress in a steamy bathroom when you arrive, and it should be fine.

PS - I did this with my wedding dress, transported in the back of a van cross country on a geology research trip from MN to Boston via Quebec. My dress spent 3 weeks laying in the back of a van, and it didn't even need steaming when I finally reached Boston for the wedding.
