So I've been ruffling merrily along and in the middle of a long strip, my ruffler stops ruffling. It's just sewing a straight stitch as if I had set it to the (star) setting instead of on the 1 setting. The best I can do on some sample strips I've tried is for it to ruffle some of the time - it switches back and forth between 'ruffling' and 'not ruffling.'

Is this a problem of the foot's settings (it was working fine all day & then spontaneously stopped), my machine settings, or do I need to make a sacrifice to the Sewing Gods of my firstborn or like an hour of hand-sewing or something? I hope I haven't broken my shiny new toy - this is only the second time I've used it, I would hope it'd last longer!

Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

joni - wish I could help, but I have never used one. I had to post though, to tell you what I read was "Help me. Trouble. Shoot my ruffle foot?" I suggest you wait for a few more answers from the good PR folk before you resort to firearms.

Don't think I'm not tempted.

Does the arm still move in time with the needle bar?

I probably have too many sewing machines, but how am I supposed to resist when they're either free by the side of the road or people give them to me?

Yes - the forked thing still pushes the fabric under the needle, but it doesn't seem to 'grab' it once it's there.

It's odd that it stopped working in the middle of a ruffle, though I've had my ruffler get misaligned if I sew long strips of ruffles and run the machine too fast. Usually though it makes alot of noise so it's obvious that the foot is the problem. If you'd changed fabric or needles or thread or something it would make more sense.

If the teeth are still pushing the pleats then the needle isn't catching that fold for some reason. I'd first take the foot off the machine and put it back on. Then I'd try setting the pleats deeper to see if the foot works on other settings.

j "Help me. Trouble. Shoot my ruffle foot?"

Reminds me of the joke about the panda, who walked into a bar, and ordered something to eat. The waiter brought him his dinner, which the panda seemed to enjoy. When the panda was done, the waiter came back and the panda pulled out a pistol and shot him (not fatally, of course), and then started to walk towards the door. The waiter said "Why the heck did you do that!?". The panda pulled out a zoology book, and opened it to the page about pandas, where it said "Eats, shoots, and leaves".

I'm pretty new to my ruffle foot, too, but I had a problem where my foot stopped ruffling. It turned out that the metal strip with the little serrated teeth that helps feed the material was out of position. It pivots from up near the stitch selector thingy (with the star, 1, 6...) and mine had been pulled back far enough that it didn't want to move forward. I just pushed it forward (to where it normally sits) and it worked fine after that. It was like it had gotten stuck a little too far back to be able to return forward if that makes sense.

Hope you find a solution!

I've been having trouble with mine, too. It's brand new. My problem is one of the sides of the fork that pushes the fabric into ruffles bent. Now I have to keep straightening it back out with a flat blade screwdriver and needle nose pliers to get it to work. I hope your problem is easier to fix. I've found my ruffler is picky about fabric types. It only ruffles what it wants to ruffle.
