But flooding is huge to me. (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

So Saturday we were sitting around late in the afternoon sharing a beer listening to the thunder storm. I was feeling pretty good as I made so much progress on my blouse and really looked forward to some sewing each of the next 2 days of holiday time.
Then it happened, big booms twice like they right over our house and of course all the power went out.
Thunder and lightening storms with very, very heavy rains. A tornado would not have surprised me at all. Well, we called the power company and got that lovely automated voice telling us everything would be fine by 7:30pm. The big boom happened around 4:30pm. As you guessed, no power by 7:30 so we called again and our time had been pushed back to 9:30pm.
Now we all have been there a time or two when we lose power. The big thing is no TV, nothing to do. Well I pulled out my ebook and, you guessed it, very little battery left. grrr!. So I picked up the knitting.
Now by this time the neighborhood was really rocking with people going back and forth and starting their generators. Generators? This is civilization, why do I need a generator? Our neighbors across the street never lost power so they gave electric starts to those that needed it. Very nervously we went to bed with full faith and confidence everything would be fine in the morning.
Morning came and we found this wonderful shallow pool in our basement. Nice clean water from the sump pump backup. (slaps self in the head)
Totally forgot about the pump not able to push that water back where it belongs. So we go buy a generator. Right, civilization sells all these wonderful things to take you back to the stone age. Water pumped out, moved all the stuff out of basement (did I mention this is where my sewing room is?) Good thing I keep all power strips and wires up at table height. There were some bins of fabric floating around. I had no clue something that heavy could float.
Overall, all machines are good, scrambled to wash fabric that got wet, not much of that at all, and started packing everything up.
The upshot is I won't be sewing for a while, DH went into shock at all the stuff I had - gave a direct order to not buy fabric until he saw results in finished product - lots of product!!! He was not happy hauling 20 big bins of fabric up to the living room plus all the rolling carts with sewing notions and thread.

We will get through this and I know many people have had much worse in the last months with weather issues. We are not even sure if this is covered by insurance.
I hope everyone else had a good holiday. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. (I am scoping sewing rooms to redo the basement and can finally get rid of the dreaded 10 ft bar that is in my way.)
Forgot to say power came back on 22 hours after the booms and we still do not have hot water as the pilot light is out. We found out the new water heater has this special part that must be replaced when submerged. Add the plumber to my list of calls.

Oh my gosh! And to think you'll have to get busy to make some "finished product"... Glad to hear you're safe!

Well I'm glad it all is working out, but yes, quite a hassle. My DH would say the same thing! We're bracing for hurricane's now that the threat of flooding here is gone.

Karen;
So sorry to hear this! What a mess! Believe me, my DH would say the exact same thing about my stash. My sewing room is in our attic and while I don't worry about flooding up there, I do occasionally worry about a tornado tearing the roof off and thinking about how silly I'd look climbing up trees to retrieve pieces of my stash.
There sure has been some strange weather this year. We are under another "severe thunderstorm warning" again tonight.

DH says something similar occasionally, but I don't pay attention. He buys tons of video games. He gets his toys and I get mine. However, I do keep track of fabric in v. fabric out. This year I have cut and sewn 24 yards and bought 8 yards to date.

Yes, we will get through this.
TGM, Mary, we did get the machines up. There is no way at this time to see if they suffered any damage from a power surge. I will definitely be unplugging everything from now on.
Miss Fairchild, yeah, lots of product. Somebody tell me why the NEED to sew went up when I realized I just couldn't pop down and put in a few minutes?
Mary, now you just put everything in perspective. Hurricanes, tornados and other problems all over the world and my little flooding is very minor. A PITA but certainly not life threatening.
Kathy,
OK, picking stash out of the countryside is a vision that lifted me up.
BTW, did I tell you I miss you already? When are you coming back?
Marilyn, that is part of my problem. DH has no hobbies and he is retiring in July (company shutting down). I may have to teach him to sew or maybe turn him into a crafter!
Thank you all for your thoughts.

Oh, I can feel your pain. We've had basement problems off and on for a few years, and it's also where I sew. About a month and a half ago, we had to replace our french drain in our basement, which was so disgustingly messy (it's when they have to jackhammer a trench around your whole basement, put pipes & rocks in, and then re-cement). We also got a new sump pump, this time with a battery back-up. When we lose power, which happens often in the summertime, that's the only thing I worry about.
It's so frustrating that the neighbors across the street rarely lose their power. We have an open invitation from them to run an extension cord across the street, and we've done this many times.
It's saved our basement and refrigerator quite a few times. We do this before we pull out & start our generator.
I'm just finishing putting my sewing room back together this week. My husband was shocked at how much stuff I had too. I took the opportunity to, when putting everything back, go through everything in our basement--Christmas decorations, sewing stuff, etc.--and do a major clean out. I can't believe how much stuff I got rid of, and the Goodwill/Salvation Army got quite a huge donation from us.
I know it's frustrating now, and things will be messed up around your house for a while, but, in the end, you will say what I'm saying--you're glad it happened because everything looks better and you were forced to clean out and re-organize.
And, you're absolutely right about it putting things into perspective. I was complaining about our situation, and then when I saw what people with real problems are going through, with their houses flooding and tornadoes, and I counted my blessings.

ouch...nothing worse than dh learning just how big that stash is! It only took us 20+ years and several minor floods to buy a battery backup for our sump pump. Good luck.
