but it worked! (Moderated by Deepika)

I have my competition ballgown on my DTD to hang the hem and really was dreading taking it off (again!) to serge the rolled hem. So much fabric to manage, etc.
So I rolled Miss Mitzie over to the serger, picked up the edge of the 44 foot hem and started to serge. When I got to where it was pulling a bit, I just turned the dress form. It was a bit like sewing with someone looking over my shoulder, but I didn't have to undress and redress the dress form and didn't have to manage all those yards of lycra and chiffon as I sewed.

That is brilliant! I love it.
BTW - ballroom dancing?? In my dreams - I would love that. It was all DH could manage to dance (read slow motion walk in a circle) at our wedding.
Good luck in your competition.

That's not a crazy, that's a great idea, tourist, I'll remember this if I get in a similar situation!
Don't want to digress but when you wrote 'crazy idea', it reminded me of a recent historical documentary on TV: You may know that in 1890, four years after Carl Benz had filed his patent for the first car, the German Emperor Wilhelm II said: 'A car is a crazy idea, it has no future'. Well, the rest is history ...

What a brilliant idea! I once hand hemmed a wedding gown by hanging it from the ceiling and sitting on a chair. I am totally going to steal your idea!

I've done this too for special occasion dresses. I actually had a plant hook in the ceiling just for this purpose in my old sewing room.
Will keep the dress form idea in mind for the next big hemmed ice dance dress I have to do -- thanks tourist!!!!

I'm wondering if you could hang that hook (into a beam with that kind of weight) and rig up a way to hang the whole dress form. There could be something in this for quilter' too, seems there is always a problem with fighting the fabric weight.
Not sewing, but crazy idea from the sewing room..........
before the advent of fiberglass tape, I convinced my husband that stitch witchery would be the ideal base for repairing the tar and gravel roof we had at the time. Worked great.
Bet you and Miss Mitzie both look stunning in the ballgown.
Best wishes in your competition and congratulations on combining your arts.

Amazing, but now I must install wheels on Edna. It sounds so much easier than horsing around 5 yards of fabric on a civil war gown.

I do hang Miss Mitzie on a hook in the kitchen from time to time, but it is excessively creepy. The wheels are from an old office chair and very handy.
Here is the dress
And a veiw of the flowers
ETA - I finished the hem, but it was rough going. Miss Mitzie kept crowding me. I think she was trying to watch me sew, but she obviously has some vision problems. Not surprising since she doesn't have any eyes.
