I've noticed that the blade on my rotary cutter has numbers running around the outer edge. Anybody know why they are there?

Okay, you made me curious to. From the Olfa website:
What do the numbers around the perimeter of the rotary blades mean?
The original rotary blade was designed to fit a safety cutter that positioned each section of the rotary blade in a fixed position to be used upon the dulling of the previous section, thus the numbers represented each of those sections. When OLFA introduced the original rotary cutter in 1979, the numbers became irrelevant, but have been maintained as a sort of historical feature representing the original rotary blade.
Of course, this ruins all the fun of speculating.

In other words...the original blade did not roll, only a small amount of blade was exposed and the numbers were so you could tell which section to change it to when the blade was dull. But now they do roll, and they leave the numbers because they reference the blade's "history", so to speak.

If you use the blades in the chenille cutter, it's like the original and doesn't roll. So the numbers do help when rotating the blade.
