I want to know if any of you have a Havanese/bichon havanese dog. How are they to train? Good with kids? What do they weigh?
TIA for your information, Di.

My neighbor just got a little female havanese this winter. She is a doll! She is three years old and came from a breeder, but was never bred. She just was not interested in it.....but she's adorable, sweet tempered and just a silly little clown. He is a surgeon, so he has odd hours and she has adapted beautifully. She travels with him and is just as friendly and sweet as any creature could be. His parents have now adopted a havanese puppy, and they couldn't be more thrilled. I have a large husky/rottie mix, Ginger who is getting on in years, and I truly think that when she goes over the Rainbow bridge, I would get a havanese as a companion.

I'm the wrong person to ask...we have a 75 lb female German Shepherd Dog and just reserved another GDS puppy - this time a male - from a litter that will be bred later this year. We're hoping he'll be over 100 lbs.

The last company I worked for the owner had one of these. One of the most loveable, loyal dogs you will ever own. BEWARE, his vet told him ahead of time they imprint on one or two people and are inconsolable if they are gone for any length of time to the point of health risks. They do make great family dogs. Lots of upkeep with the coat though.

You must be prepared to spend a LOT of time giving just tons and tons of hugs and kisses and praises. Sigh, wish someone would do this for me! Wait, I hear my honey calling me now!

Thank you for your responses! I've read very positive things about this breed. The coat is the only real negative, but actually I'm ok with the grooming thing. I'm fine with walking, too.
I am looking for small, non-shedding/low allergy, good personality, and has to be ok with children (mine are getting older, but some younger kids visit, too.) I have a pup reserved; but I won't see a picture until she is 6 weeks old. She's black and white. So hopefully we'll fall for her and bring her home in Sept! When I proofread this paragraph, it struck me as funny-like having a dog on lay-a-way.

I have three havanese and have personally enabled 3 more people to get one.

When I got my first havanese, my kids were aged 3, 4 & 6. I have never had any trouble with the dogs towards my children in any way. I will say that Harriet, my pup that was bred at a house of homeschooled kids has an undying, everlasting devotion to young children, the younger, the better! She would climb in any passing stroller and just cuddle if she could. Even when my nephew was able to sit but not walk, he would grab chunks of her hair and pull it out. She still liked him so much that she persisted until she realized she could cuddle up to his back and he could not reach her.

My dogs are bonded to me mostly for the large part because I feed them and walk them but they do love other people. I have successfully left them behind and shipped them off and after about a day or two of pining, they bonded to the new person.

I can take them out for walks/runs of over an hour as they are hearty dogs. All three of mine weigh 8 - 10 lbs. One was a rescue and was wild when he came to me at 3 months as he had to fight for his life on a farm. He is now my cuddliest pumpkin.

All three have different personalities but all three are lovely and charming in their own way.

Aside from the grooming, I think they are the perfect small dog. I liken them to a lab in a tiny body.

There! Did that help? I am excited for you! I would be a crazy dog lady if I could afford it.

My favorite dog is the ADOPTABLE kind--from the pound, shelter or rescue! Save a life--ADOPT-Don't SHOP! Actually when you rescue from pound, shelter or rescue, you are saving TWO LIVES--the dog you are adopting and the dog that will fill your new dog's spot!

I agree. There are breed specific organizations that rescue as well. The internet is a great place to start if one wants a certain breed. One would be surprised at what ends up at the area shelters and surrendered due to puppy mills and neglect. My daughter and her husband are vets and we all have really odd mixed breeds that are thoroughly pampered pooches and rescues as well. It is heartbreaking to be involved with shelters and see what winds up there so at least please consider looking when one wants a new friend.

How about getting a dog from a shelter and not supporting breeders? You might be able to find one at a Havanese rescue.
