This is kind of a spin off of our Machine Finds thread and the Delusional thread. But it is really its own subject because the same things drive me NUTS every time I see them.
1. "Machine works fine - just needs a belt. Asking $1000."
Question: How do they know the machine works fine without a belt? And if a belt costs less than $10 why don't they go ahead and replace it if they're asking that much money....WHY????
2. Picture of the cabinet - machine is INSIDE. Or, picture of a case - machine is INSIDE.
Nuff said (idiots)
3. We've talked about this one before, but really....Petal machine (is it a flower?), Peddle machine (does it sell something?)
I'm sure I have more, this is just getting me started. What else have you guys got?

Drives me nuts to see them demoing it using leather., or on many thicknesses.... on a machine that clearly should not be used to sew leather.. Who would want to buy it after its been abused like that.

Oh. on your question.. well clearly they used a belt they borrowed off another machine to test it.. same way they used a foot control and such off another machine to test it.. That seems to be a real popular thing to do..

I see those ads all the time.. Missing foot pedal but I borrowed one from another machine to test it.. and it works fine.. the needle went up and down..

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.

I've gotten used to the leather demos, but the one where they sewed coke cans got me! The machine was way overpriced anyway, but it's bad enough picking lint out of an old machine..but aluminum shreds???
I enjoy the ones who say they can't sew and don't know how to thread the machine, but it worked perfectly for Grandma...sure, fifty years ago!

Oh me too! I thought good grief, you'd have to be beyond idiot to buy that.
My pet peeve was extraoridinarily high shipping cost, and no explanation for how it would be packed. And when you ask, they reply with * it will be shipped well*. Oh okay, you have my complete confidence now.
Glad I'm done collecting previously owned machines. Truly I am. But of course I must cruise Craigslist every so often just to get a good belly laugh.

Some manufacturers do pretty poorly on their own websites. I've started to hate the background music on the videos and there's one that shows a room like it's an add for furniture store, BUT, you can zoom in if you actually want to see the sewing machine.
One video was so sadly homemade it was embarassing just to watch it. On a manufacturer's website.
I don't think I've seen a list of features yet that included amps and hz.
Kenmore invites you to ask questions and, if they can, they answer you. One answer, paraphrased by me, "sorry, a view of the stitches on the machine is not available." Sometimes it's a previous purchaser who answers.
But hey! $1,000 to $13,000 and it's YOURS.

So many Craigs list ads say "sewing machine for sale, $100."
no brand, no model or pics.
Why would I waste my time responding to those. And why would they want all those calls.

In my cynicism I figure that have no sewing machine but hope to entrap women. It's that or they are just stupid. I am not ever impressed by Craigslist which seems to almost always really run to the tattered, the odd, the really badly written ads and the suspect goods. BBrrr....

I have gotten some truly bodacious deals on CL, so I would never blow it off altogether. You have to weed through the stupidity, though. But sometimes the seller's "ignorance" can work in your favor, like when I bought my Featherweight on CL: machine and case both in excellent condition, original blue manual, complete accessories, plus a Griest blind hemmer attachment. The ad said "Antique Singer with accessories, $75". When I saw what it was I almost wet my pants!
