i want to do right by my new FW baby, and, since it's just come back from being serviced it's ready to go and already 3/4 through its first tailored jacket. are there any must-know websites or resources for FW owners?

Even though it has just been serviced, check the foot controller periodically. I adjusted mine so that it would sew (the end was loose), checked the interior wiring to make sure it was in good shape, and forgot to unplug it. Several hours later, the foot controller was so hot I couldn't pick it up.
I've had machines that the pedal got warm before, but this is the first that actually burned my fingers. I was lucky I didn't burn down anything..
Unplug when finished and check..can't stress that enough!

Featherweight RX
Dave McCallum's book, "The Featherweight 221 and I" and the accompanying DVD "Those Fantastic Featherweights", are valuable resources for servicing the machine yourself.
Happy sewing!

Well you will get more than you bargained for right here!
Lots of FW enthusiasts.
I have one (just one!) but I almost never use it. A shame. I think it has been so drilled into my head that Value = Condition that I don't enjoy using it. I might nick it! I might scratch it! I might wear off the decals!
Its almost a pity I don't have a nice battle scarred FW that I can just use to my heart's content.

That is rapidly going the way of the dinosaur.
People are realizing there are ways to have the machine returned to it's original condition.
So functionality is becoming more important than form, in my little world anyway

COngrats on the new featherweight baby!!!
Definitely what Soolip said; Dave McCallum's book is an absolute must (and the DVDs too, if you can). You will never again have to pay for having your FW serviced, as Dave will show you step by step exactly how to do it yourself, and how easy it really is to do.
The other website that imo is a must is Leo Kujat's "Question of the Week" articles.

Would love to see a photo of the new baby...

that's why i am so pleased with mine. it's pretty enough that i can leave it out, but not in such perfect condition that i have to worry about bollixing it up too much. it's really perfect for sewing and i've already started. i got an absurd collection of presser feet with it, as well, plus 4 bobbins and 2 bobbin cases.

Oooh! Your baby is a RARE one!
The "SINGER" decal on the machine arm, instead of the machine lamp, is quite rare, and only a few 1939 Featherweights had it. Congrats on your very beautiful (and my fave year of) Featherweight!
