fusible...non fusible...steam...wash and dry (Moderated by EleanorSews)

So I have decided to make my first project ever requiring interfacing ( Dress shirt, collar and cuffs). I have seen people mentioning preshrinking the interfacing. Is this done just by a normal wash and dry, soaking in water and ironing, just steaming it with the iron, also what about fusible interfacing is the fusible nature effected by the method of shrinking?
I'm a TOTAL NewB to interfacing any resources will help, including any tips that you might give me to questions that I didn't know to ask but might fit in with these questions.

Usually I just put interfacing in hot water, wait for water to cool down, then jently squeeze the interfacing, spread it and line dry. Do not iron the fusible! It will be straight after it has dried.

I'd seen the blog "Off The Cuff" referred to here and the author, Pam Erny, as having a sewing supply internet site that had the most amazing interfacing. Locally I have squat as far as options in interfacing. I ordered some from her (Fashion Sewing Supply, I think it's called) and I will NEVER buy anything else as long as she's in business. The difference is like comparing rocks to diamonds. Shipping only took a few days. She gives explicit instructions as to use of her products, too. Check out her site, is my recommendation.

I saw on a Pellon facing "no shrinking necessary" but many generics
have no insructions on them.

Hi Lena,
My blog is http://Off-The-Cuff-Style.blogspot.com/ ...and I am happy you are pleased with our interfacing :)
About pre-shrinking interfacing. Good interfacing should never need pre-shrinking! ...professional-grade interfacing has already been thoroughly steamed to prevent shrinkage BEFORE the fusible resins are applied.
Can you imagine better "Designer RTW factories" (I'm talking $700-$1000 shirts and blouses, etc) taking the time to dip interfacing into water before they hit the sewing line? umm...no. That's because factories that make expensive Designer clothes use professional grade interfacing...it's ready to go right off the roll.
Just my opinion..an educated one since I have interfacing custom-milled thousands of yards at a time.

Thank-you so much everyone, I appreciate the time you all spend helping us learn this Great art. I'm already engrossed by this hobby, I can see already that I will need to create a sewing corner in my apt, because I need my kitchen table back and I don't see my sewing machine being put away again any time soon.

In e Patterns and Notions heading check the HeavyWeight Interfacing Thread. Gakadriel45 has good recommendations on Palmer/Pletsch.
Also, hope this Pr thread helps:
Sewing Techniques and Tips
Interfacing, Block Fusing and Preshrinking
I'll bump it up.

I have notice that with pillow stuffing, I have never been able to find the high quality stuff they use in manufacturing, in retail stores. I am not sure it is available to individual retail customers.
I wonder if it is the same situation with interfacing. Is it possible to buy your interfacing at retail stores?
The interfacings I buy do not specify that pre-shrinking is necessary, but I do not want to risk not pre-shrinking it, so I do it anyway. I would love to find one and retail stores that specifies: "pre-shrinking not necessary".

Hi Cinca, my retail store is online (see my signature line). It has been reviewed here on the PR site Click Here to see the PR review
The interfacing that I have custom milled does NOT shrink...period.
Please feel free to message me privately for more information, and/or read the PR reviews :)
Best, Pam
