I have an outdoor furniture cushion that I am afraid I have screwed up forever, and could use suggestions about how to possibly correct the problem. Here's what happened.

Last night DH bobbled his wine glass and spilled some red wine on the cushion. It's an outdoor cushion, so the fabric is not terribly porous, but I went into a tizzy trying to make sure that the wine didn't stain the cushion. I googled some info on how to remove red wine, and the suggestion was a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and detergent (dish detergent), so that's what I used. The good news is that I don't see any sign of red wine, but now I have a sort of watermark on the cushion. Part of the problem, I think, is that I haven't been able to get all the detergent out. The directions said to launder the "clothing" after blotting away the wine, but I don't think I can launder the cover. Our dry cleaner said that the braided trim would shrink in any kind of cleaning.

So-
Should I continue to try to blot these marks with plain old water? Or is there something else I can try?

The worst part of all of this is that just yesterday morning I bought a new piece of foam for the cushion, and DH and I were really happy with how much more comfortable it was. Good thing, since currently if we have any company, one of us will have to stay planted on the cushion to hide the watermarks.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

So sorry to hear this.. I thought you were suppose to use champagne to remove wine stains.. Not trying to be funny..thats what I always thought.. but then I don't drink wine.. as it stains worse than margaritas..

And my first instinct was it was the peroxide that may be causing the water mark.. It can act much like a bleach..

How many times have you tried rinsing it ..if any .. with just water since you treated it.. that might help..

HOPEFULLY. .Some with more experience with fine wines will post soon..

If all else fails Valerie.. just find a coordinate fabric.. and cut a long enough piece to cover the cover.. turn under a bit the edges.. , hem a bit.. and place it over your cushion.. You can then throw that in the wash as often as needed.. Outdoor fabrics are easy enough to find .. you don't have to cover the whole cushion.. That will protect your original cushion also..

My thought too.

I'm sorry about your cushion.

Yeah, I've had the same thought about the peroxide. It did occur to me that I could simply turn the cushion over. The braided trim definitely gives it an up and a down, but I don't think anyone will be scrutinizing it that closely.

Do you have a good wet/dry shop vac? If you consider the cushion unacceptable then you could't hurt it by doing this:
Evenly damp sponge over the water spot area and then use shop vac. Then repeat over larger area with damp sponging and shop vac. Continue repeating until sponging encompasses entire side of cushion so that every bit of the surface has been wet and vacuumed dry. When using the damp sponge, use consistent strokes the same direction. You'll be working on getting any residual soap out and evenly water marking the entire face of that side of the cushion.

We had a similar thing happen when my Dad's dog would throw up on the white rug. The spot would come clean, but the rest of the rug was noticeably grungy compared to the clean spot. Try cleaning the rest of the cushion -- I've heard Oxiclean works well for that sort of thing. Then the spot won't be so noticeable.
