Anyone tried to make one? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Hi Everyone...
I'm interested in putting lights inside a wine bottle. Has anyone tried to make one? Did you actually drill a hole in the bottom of the bottle?
Thanks for any advice.

Okay, you got me interested. Our friends did this with glass blocks wrapped with a big beautiful gold ribbbon and bow. We loved the one they gave to us as a present.

I do this with a tall vintage 50's vase that has a bubble shape at the bottom and a long thin neck. I just feed the string of lights into it and let the excess cord come out the top and hang down the back and then this excess plugs into the wall. I put fake greenery and poinsettias into it and so it camouflages the cord. Love it!

I thought they used those lights on a battery...probably easier than drilling holes, if you can get the battery part though the neck.

Not a wine bottle but a similar gift.
About 8 years ago a girlfriend gave me a fishbowl vase with mini Christmas lights and potpourri in it. The top was covered with a doily. The cord hung down the back.
As the lights warm up the potpourri gives off more scent. It never gets hot enough to worry about the the wide neck lets the excess heat out.
We have replaced the potpourri once. It sits on the bathroom counter and we just love it.
My friend is a single mom and I know she bought the vases and doilies at Thrift shops, but it is one of the best gifts I have received.
I should do them up for my co-workers this year.

I have two glass water bottles, the kind used in a water cooler. I just threaded a string of lights into each with the plug coming out the top. It's pretty sitting on the floor. You need a longer string of lights for these.

Thanks for the question JillyBean333. The answers your getting have given me some ideas on brightening up that dark brick hole in our den called a fireplace
It will be a big deal if we get 3 days of hard freeze here. The fireplace doesn't ever get used.

Thanks to you all for all the good replies. I didn't know they sell drill bits for glass, so I will probably try to pick up one of those when at home depot next time. Letting the cord hang out the top is a good idea too.
Anyway, I've had a miserable cold so may not get over there for another day or two.
Also, I figure it worth a try with drilling a hole...what have I got to lose? If I break the bottle it's just an excuse to open and drink another one (not all at once, mind you).

Green tea with all the honey and lemon you can stand. Two full cups, back to back, swig, don't sip.
One hour later, something cold and refreshing to drink.
One hour later, green tea, as above, again.
So, you're drinking the green tea mix every two hours and something cold in between. It's not particularly intended to taste good, just to do the job.
I'm not a total grump when things go wrong. I shared this with my contact at the electric company who was obviously very ill last Wednesday. She had called me from home. When I had to call her back yesterday, she couldn't thank me enough, said she immediately bought green tea to get started and felt better the next morning.
Tea quality matters. Our favorite brand, zhena's gypsy teas.
Best wishes.
