So my poor machine must go in for service. While trying to sew up my fleece jacket, she started going into fits - shredding thread, skipping stitches... I nursed her along for awhile, then she started shredding thread every couple of inches. I cleaned, oiled, changed needles, bobbins, thread. I nearly cried when I watched the timing of the needle and bobbin hook. She's unusable since yesterday, will go in for service on Thursday and then he'll *try* to return her to me next Thursday. My back-up machine (an old, well-used, simple machine) is also down. I suppose I better start shopping for a replacement "just in case". I don't want anything computerized, would love the Kenmore 16231 but can't find it.... Just sharing my trauma.

Just use the time to get everything else that needs to be done.. done.. so when the machine is returned you can go straight back to sewing.. without having to clean or cook.. do up some casseroles now instead..

I feel your pain..

In case of a sewing emergency... take the garment to your dealers and pretend to be shopping for another machine.. You can then fix your garment while ''trying out '' their machines.. and who knows. you may find another machine that you must have..

Maybe your dealer has a "loaner".

Matbe you can find a 20.00 thrift store machine. You may have to spend a few hours cleaning and oiling but there are lots of lovely machines looking for a new home.

Sounds like time for a valium :)

I agree with everyone else use the time wisely so you can make up the down time when the machine is returned.. If you look abit nervy when you drop the machine off, the repairman might take pity on you and rush it through for you..

I would spend the time tidying/arranging your sewing area, maybe pull your stash out and match up fabrics with patterns, cut out your patterns and fabric so you can just sit down and sew to your little heart content..

Maybe a few extra meals so you can just pull out and heat would be good.. But if all worse fails, just rememeber to breath slowly, your baby is coming home.. Really!

Hubby has been painting the 2nd BR/sewing room the last 2 days, and
totally interrupted my Christmas projects. So of course I went to the fabric store, and ordered online.
And then cut out future projects on my kitchen counter.

Craigslist around here turns up nice older mechanicals almost every week. A lot are from gramma's estates, and no one knows they are desirable, so sometimes priced at $40, and maybe in the attic for 20 years too. Seldom see them here in SA or GW, but they also turn up in
our big consignment antique malls, so check our yours.

PP, what a great idea for in-case-of-emergency!
I am definitely going to spend my time cleaning and planning for Thanksgiving, then shopping and wrapping for Christmas. All the while, I'll be having pity parties for myself. I should Soooo use the time to work on my stash, organizing and matching like Kerry suggested. That idea made a week and half sound like a short amount of time! ha!
I would pop into the thrift shop but dh would probably place me and my machines at the curb if I tried to fit another one in here... Man, is it only day 2???

If you're like many of us, you have a lot of projects lined up. Maybe spend some time now on the cutting/marking process, fusing interfacing, basting, etc.? I don't know what type of sewing you do, but maybe there is also some other handwork to be done - crocheting an edging, readying an applique, felting a flower, maybe beading a necklace and earrings to go with that new outfit? It may not be sewing, but a creative fix always helps me. Hope your time flies!

Only a week? I bought my machine in September of last year. The deal I got included one free servicing, within the first year. So, when September rolled around, I brought it in for cleaning, to have the broken needle threader replaced, and to have a knee lift installed.

It took THREE WEEKS.

A week-and-a-half is nothing! Around here, no one even opens up the case until the machine has sat at the tech's for at least 3 wks. You'll have to wait much longer if they have to order parts. I think the high prices charged reflect a storage fee....

Anyway, I couldn't imagine having to depend on only one machine. I have at least 20 willing and able to tackle any job, plus many more that are just sooooo nice to look at. I mean, it would be fate worse than death to have to resort to, ummm, housework, because I couldn't sew!
