I have to hand it to you quilters out there this is not easy. even though I used the same sized strips of fabric, it is still longer on one side than the other. I decided first quilt I will use it personally for a couch blanket. I made it full size, now I have all my peices sandwiched together and I thought I would be able to using quiliting designs on my PE 780D brother. First I had difficulty getting the quilt hooped, it did not want to fit in my 5X7 hoop. Then I downloaded very simple and low thread quilting designs. THe designs were no were near as big as I thought they woudl be, and the quilt is so heavy I think it was keeping the machine from properly stitching out the design. I was holding the weight of the quilt as best I could, I think the bulk from between the embroidery arm and the machine - harp space i believe- was much to small for what I was trying to do. Now I know I am doing just a gazillion things wrong. Does anyone have any tips to help me. Or do I just wait til I upgrade my machine to try this quilting thing again.

What size is your quilt? Cotton can be heavier than poly batting, so that might help next time.
On another group, it was suggested to clip the quilt to just the bottom hoop, using those quilters clips - I forget the name of them. The ones I've seen are red and metal. That may help some.
But, yes, the quilt just might be too heavy for your machine. I hope someone with much experience embroidering quilts chimes in. I want some tips as well.

I made the quilt top out of my winters scrap wool. So there is my first problem. I really want it to be finished and quilted I will look for the quilting clips. I haven't heard of those before I bet that would help. I am thinking of getting either a horizon 7700 or a symphony by babylock this fall. I may wait til I get one of those to finish it. Its not like I am going to be needing a flannel backed wool blanket this summer

Not all designs will work on the thickness of a quilt.

Are you using embroidery designs for quilts?

You can use tear away stabilizer and spray adhesive, such as Sulky for hoop-less machine embroidery.

Stitch a running stitch frame around the area to be embroider to help hold the layers in place.

I did run stitches around the area first, and I used the most simple quilting designs I could find. They were specifically quilting designs. They don't look horrible but it was very stressful to get what came out.

I have done a throw quilt with quilting designs from emb lib. I've done it when I had my 750D and also with the quattro. I used designs that weren't directional so that i had the smallest amount of fabric in the throat space as often as possible. if the design was directional I used the software to flip it so I didn't have a huge amount under the throat space. The next most important for me was supporting the weight of the quilt everywhere else by using a bigger table. you have to sort of make sure the quilt that flows over the arm is only barely drapped that way and a bit higher so it can't get caught.

Its one of those things that you have to do when you have heaps of time to just set it up and a ton of paitence.

I spray basted the layers together and went lighter on the pins. which I think works better if you are putting it in the hoop.

Some of the lighter designs don't give a wow factor you may want to experiment with a sample and some different threads for effect.

The experience though does convert you to the many advantages of quilt as you go technique which is much more hoop friendly.

I think basting the layers prior, and trying to elevate what goes over the embroidery arm sound like very good ideas! Thanks asilind!

What kind of embroidery are you using. Stippling or one line designs? You don't want to use anything dense. If you want a more detailed design on your quilt. Just put it on the top layer. And when you do hoop it no stabillzer needed. Have to make sure it doesn't drag. I think using embroidery machine for quilting is better when you are quilting as you go.

I am just using one line designs. DH is into celtic stuff so I am using ver simple celtic knots with - Triads- with just single lines no width to them. I think i can get it on there with less fabric in the center.

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.
