Once again starting a project that should be quick, easy and fun and getting stuck trying to get a decent stitch out of the silly thing. Having tried virtually everything to get it to make a nice seam that won't pull apart yesterday, I left the sewing room in a huff. Today I will vacuum it thoroughly and see if that makes it happy.

No advice but I can definitely sympathize. Most recently I was having trouble with my lower looper thread travelling to the right side. I did all the normal checks for tensions, needle placement, etc. I got up and walked away for a few hours -- had errands to run. When I came back to it I noticed that the thread for the lower looper had somehow become wrapped around the upper thread guide and therefore was not flowing "freely" through the thread path. Fixed that little wrap-around and everything was cool.
This was on my Juki serger -- my Janome is having some issues as well but I think it needs to go to the shop. I'll give it one more try and then off to the technician to see if it's worth fixing -- it's my first serger and now is more or less my back-up machine. I think it might be time to retire the Janome, relegate the Juki to back-up and pick up another serger for the main machine.
Hopefully a thorough vacuuming will solve the problem.

Yep, been there too....and more than I would like....I put my fancy shmancy serger overlock combo on the floor and got out my old faithful Paff 796 that NEVER needs adjusting. Big investmet to sit on the floor, but my 4 thread baby hardly needs a tweak. ....ever!

I feel your pain! Been there, done that. Broke down and bought a Babylock 2 years ago and have never had an ounce of problem with tensions or threading. Worth every penny just to keep my sanity! Good luck!

Does your machine have adjustable presser foot pressure? But then too, it sounds to me like tensions.

Use Janome needles (or ogran) in the machine especially when sewing on knits. Unthread the whole machine, put the tensions to 0, pressure foot up, take a white cotton fabric fold in half and with the folded edge run it in the tension disks back and forth. You will be amazed how much fluff comes out. Vacuum machine, oil, cross fingers..
. Sometimes they just like attention. If the seam feels loose when you pull on it tighten the outside needle. Check that regular needle plate is on not roll hem.

Thanks everyone. I needed a place to rant and moan for a bit. I did manage to get it to a tolerable state and got about half the project done. I did not remember the fabric in the tension disc trick so I will try that. I think it is mad at me for sewing up all that glitter fabric here and here.

tourist, I think all the sergers were having a diva moment yesterday. I've never picked out so much stitching in my life. The coverstitch (Diva of the DIVAS) was the worst. I pulled out the new Kemore, which I haven't made friends with yet, and threatened the other two that they could be replaced.
Pressure foot pressure has a lot to do with it, but sometimes they just get all squabbily like children.
Oooooh, pink glittery fabric!!!

My Singer 5 thread/ Cover stitch combo hates doing hems, especially over seam allowances on knits where it matters if stitching is an even amount from the bottom hem. An offering of a few new feet, day at the spa, a Sunday drive down a peaceful country road has made it much more willing to work in 20 minute intervals. Perhaps it was the shinny brouchure for the 1200D. It's a good thing I have 2 other sergers or I'd never get anything done.
