I have become a thread-a-holic...there's something about it that's like the big box of Crayons when you were a kid; I love all the colors. And I like trying out different types and weights of threads.
The problem, of course, is how to store them so you can easily find what you need.
I've been using Artbins and orgainizing by color but now I have so many different TYPES of threads that it's confusing.
I still haven't come up with anything different that makes sense, though.
How do you organize all those spools???

I don't think I have as much thread as you do but it sounds fun!

I have a wall mounted thread organizer but the dust is such in this city (btw the rubble and the construction sites, ugh) that I keep my thread stash in plastic boxes and only leave out the ones I'm using.

I seem to remember someone online buying a sort of cabinet and replacing the back plank by a peg board. So you had the best of both worlds: closing doors but vertical storage. Or something.

I'm sure others will have cool ideas.

There is a very pretty Martha Stewartthread rack in one of the mail order home Catalogs. Just google....hopefully a link will turn up.

I use cookie tins. Frequently the tin color matches the thread inside. Climate is dry so rust hasn't been a concern. Did put a simple label on the outside of each tin for quick reference.
Really large tins are great for thread on cones.

Not a solution for everyone but works well for me since those tins were just collecting dust!

I'd love a wall rack so I can see all the colors, but between dust and a cat that bats at anything with a thread or string hanging, it's just not happening at my house. Not to mention no wall space, unless I take down the padded fabric I use for pinning up ideas and papers.

I have my threads in a plastic Iris drawer unit. Neutrals and blues in 1 drawer, all other colors in another drawer, serger cones in 1 drawer, and specialty threads in another. I cut poster board to make dividers to keep them in rows, and somewhat neater.

I rarely use special threads on the machine, so bobbins are in one of those green plastic Clover bobbin holders. Any bobbins with specialty threads are usually kept on a separate row.

Pricey, but I recently bought a 10-drawer Bisley collection cabinet when they were 40% off at the Container Store, and put the 9-Compartment Deep Drawer Inserts in them.

Perfect for thread.

What an absolutely brilliant idea!! I bet one could use it to store more than just thread.

Thanks for posting the link and picture. I am thrilled for other reasons - mainly because this company ships to Canada. Eureka!! I am described as an anal person who likes organization. This is the mother load for me.

I have to wonder if you have stash that goes with all that thread? Oh my, that would be a lot of stash.

Those Bisley drawers were exactly what came to mind... the price has jumped significantly. I also found these drawers though not as enclosed as the Bisley.

The Container Store
