I love my apartment...but the layout has always been a little jarring...and there's this lovely alcove that is my dining room and everytime I look at it, all I can picture there is my bed! I dont' use the dining room, and the bedroom gets great light, but is in the front of the building. The dining room is in the back and is much quieter. It does open up into the living room (a big box) but I was thinking of moving my sewing area/painting studio into the bedroom and moving my bed into the dining area. To keep the bed from being visible from the front entrance, I ordered a Japanese shoji screen to block it off like a room, but keep the light.

Am I crazy? Yes my bedroom will be in full view of the kitchen and the patio, but it almost seems as if I would be back living in a loft, which I miss....

Good for you! I always thought the "standard house layout" was overrated. My mom never used her "dining room" as such, either.

A few strategically placed curtains can keeps things private. I like your idea of Shoji screen.

no, you're not crazy.

sometimes, with the exception of the bathroom, what's written on the floor plan should be considered a suggestion.

I had a great Gold Coast Chicago apt years ago, and I put my bed in the living room in a floor to ceiling window bay. Do whatever suits you :)

It sounds wonderful and that it will fit your lifestyle better. You get loft living and a studio. win - win
