Very off topic, but timely just the same (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

With so many abductions and murder of girls in the news I decided to check the nh se#### offenders database for anyone close to us. I haven't checked it in a year or so. I was really surprised to find someone who lives in our complex on the list. The site has a photo as well as address, description, birthdate, the county the offense took place in, the date of the offense, and the offense itself.
The person who is listed for our complex was convicted for aggravated felonious se#### assault on a person under 13. He lives 2 doors down from two little girls 7 and 11. Their parents are concerned and plan to watch things closely.
I've discussed it with my kids. I showed them his picture and explained to them that this man was convicted for doing something bad to a child and that he may have learned his lesson and will never do anything like that again, there is a possibity that he hasn't changed, so they need to make sure the kids outside stick together and if a stranger approaches them they need to make sure that stranger knows that they are together. I also told them if they feel the least bit uncomfortable about anyone, they should call me on the walkie talkie and simply say "hey mom, (our secret password)" and I would reply "hey kiddo, (our secret password) back to you" as I'm rushing outside to see what the problem might be.
I talked to the complex manager yesterday, on the off chance they didn't know about him, and to let her know that more and more parents have checked the the list. Also, there's the possibilty that someone may try to harrass him until he moves, which in my opinion, should not happen. She's had a couple of other parents come to her as well, including one father who went to the person and told him that he was aware of his past and wants to make sure that he knows everyone would be watching out for the kids.
Sheesh, if it's not one thing to worry about, it's another.

Scary, isn't it? The state of Florida has had an online sex-offender registry for awhile. When my son was young I checked it periodically to see if any were living near me. It's a very useful tool that not everyone even knows about.

It is kind of scary. Both Jessica and Sarah lived pretty close. Sarah was just the next town over.

Personally, I wouldn't let my kids out of my sight. At least as much as I could. But I think it was wise that someone went to this perpetrator and let him know that he wasn't invisible.

We just checked the registry last month in our area. Plenty of sex offenders, but at the present time none that are in very close proximity. IMO, it's something that probably should be done every month or so. Getting in the habit of checking would be a good thing. It's very easy to forget to check until something terrible happens and you hear about it on the news.

I was dissapointed to see that they charge $10 for this information for each area you want to investigate. My area in San Diego County has a free map of sex offenders locations, but it is not near as informative. Wonder why we have to pay to protect our families? Doesn't seem fair.

I was glad to hear that the father had already confronted this man. And believe me, the parents are watching out for our kids, so are the non-parenting neighbors. I spoke to several mom's that I know to make sure they knew about this guy, some did, some didn't, but all of the mom's and dad's are watching now. Our kids will be safe.
I agree that the list should be checked every month or two, rather than yearly or when I get around to it.
I think that if you look at your state government website you will be able to find the information you need without charge. I found the information for my area through the NH government website. Also, most television stations will probably have a link for the area they cover on their websites.
I remember when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's our big sisters would tell us to stay away from "dirty old man Payne's" house. Now we have to worry about whether someone will molest our children and bury them under the house without us knowing he's a threat.

Not in Florida. Although at this point, I think there'd be riots in the streets if it wasn't free.

Thanks. I looked further and found a site where I could look up information for free and it includes pictures and addresses. I used to check the old site periodically (without pics & just general addys) to see if se#### predators live near areas where I like to walk my dog. My mother used to do the exams for se#### assault victims (and suspects) in our county, so I am very aware of the danger and I try not to put myself in dangerous situations.
I'm passing this helpful information on to my son & his family.

Very good advice about being aware of who lives in our neighborhoods. In the newpaper a police spokesperson was quoted as saying the police do not have enough staff to stay current on the whereabouts of sex offenders, so it is up to the public to be alert, and citizens should notify the police when they are aware that a registered sex offender has moved.
Does anyone know who publishes the National Alert Registry that the first message links to? On a quick check I didn't see a publisher or owner statement on the website. Working in the publishing industry, I have learned always to look for clear publisher identification of any information source as a factor in reliability, authenticity, trustworthiness. And if I'm sending money, my street or email address, or any other personal information, I want to know exactly who I'm sending it to. Anything published by the federal government or a state government will be identified as such. When accessing a database, I want to know how up-to-date it is, especially if I'm paying for the data. If a publisher is not identified, I feel more comfortable seeking the info from a known source, such as the state or federal government.
