What would you do (Moderated by Deepika)

I bought a pattern on Etsy and although it is a nice pattern the instructions leave a lot to be desired. I have come to the part where I am supposed to put two buttonholes over 5 rows of encased elastic. Having come this far with a lot of changes on my part to make it more nicely finished,I don't want to ruin the whole dress by messing this up. One possible change would be to make belt loops instead. There are two sashes that come over the shoulders, down through the wrong side of the dress coming out of the buttonholes and tied at the back of the garment (if this makes sense). Attached is a picture taken from the creator's instruction page.

Oh yes, I would be a bit nervous about sewing button holes through elastic! You could end up with a very (not) pretty mess!
Belt loops would work OK but they might not sit as nicely without the stability of passing the straps through the main fabric. To help with this you could put some button holes on the straps and two buttons on the back of the dress either side of your belt loops - button the straps and then pass the ends through the loops and tie the bow at the back. That way the buttons are taking the stress and the belt loops and bow are just for effect.
You might also find that rouleau loops works better than belt loops as they are only attached at one point rather than two and will move more freely.

Farbenmix use rouleau loops a lot in their children's clothing to great effect.

What's to keep the elastic from pulling out when you cut the buttonholes? I realize the buttonhole will add some stitches that might hold it, but I wouldn't trust it either.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

My thoughts exactly. I notice in the designers images she doesn't show a completed buttonhole.

I am just going to bump this up for some more suggestions although I like the single loop idea too.

Wow.. never seen this before.. Just wondering if could have done the buttonholes first.. then the elastic.. but I can't figure that method out either where it would result in what is needed..
Nope. not me. I would not try it now.. but you might. Take some scrap fabric and put in the elastic and then try the buttonholes.. I certainly would practice on a scrap and see the results before trying it on a garment this far along. Who knows. it might turn out fine.
Loop idea is okay.. but I think I would do more like a belt loop..

Bad instructions. I'd be more inclined since it has to come through to the outside to take a square of bias fabric, won't ravel, and sew a narrow oval to form a finished buttonhole, cutting and turning it to the inside. Kind of like a Spanish snap buttonhole. Tack the fabric square on the inside.
It really should have had you stop the elastic on either side of the buttonhole and the sash would have pulled in the remaining ease.

Would it work to add a couple of rows of stitching or zigzag on each side of the buttonholes before cutting? Maybe 1/4" back from the buttonhole stitching so it's not right at the cut end of the elastic?
