Irons with shut-off override (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 3/5/13 8:30 AM ET
My iron has a feature that allows me to override the auto shut-off. It’s a feature I really appreciate, but I don't trust myself to remember to unplug the iron when I am finished sewing. Leaving the iron on and unattended isn't safe. So I devised a method that will override my forgetfulness.
I keep the iron plugged into a simple timer. Even when the iron is unplugged, the timer is kept on the iron cord. Keeping the iron plugged into the timer reminds me to use the timer. When I start to sew, I set the timer for the amount of time I expect to sew and plug it into the outlet. Then, I enable the iron's override feature. If I forget to unplug the iron when I'm finished sewing, the timer will shut the iron off. Of course, I’m trying to get into the habit of unplugging the iron, but this is a good back-up plan.

Just make sure to use a heavy duty timer that's got a high enough rating for the iron. That V100 pulls 1800W, and timers designed for a lamp might only be rated for 600W or so. Using a timer above its rating could make the timer itself catch fire

Mine is plugged into the same outlet as the light over the ironing board, light on/iron on; light off/iron off.
Another simple method is to put a rubber band on your wrist when the iron is on. Turn off the iron and lay the rubber band on the ironing board for the next go at the iron.

Thanks for the heads up.

I agree. My iron actually says to not plug anything else into the same outlet because it draws so much power!
