Paducah book

So for the rest of us that couldn't make it to Paducah they are going to charge us to see the quilts. A blog I follow whose owner went to Paducah said they weren't allowed to take any pictures of the show quilts. I thought that was odd now I know why. I think this is awful. And I wonder if the owners of said quilts are getting any kickback from this. If they are it's a little more acceptable if they aren't it's downright greed.

It doesn't bother. It would cost me a lot more to pay admission, hotel, food, travel expense, etc., to see the quilts in person and the photos would be better than anything I can take.

For years (decades?) there has been discussion about not posting a photo of anyone else's quilt due to .... copyright issues.

I thought photos were a no-no as well as touching.

It's been a long time since we traveled to Paducah. I found the bustle of the river front, the art on the flood walls and Hancocks just as exciting as the quilt museum itself.

That is odd. I went to the show on Wednesday (opening day) and everybody was taking pictures to their heart's content. They must have changed the rules overnight.

A couple years ago I spent 2 weeks in St. Louis with a friend of mine (she's an avid quilter!) and we took a trip to Paducah to the quilt show. No photos were allowed but that didn't bother me because the quilts were just gorgeous and I can imagine they were copyrighted. The miniatures were unbelievable!!

We also went to Elinor Burns' store and Hancock's.

Quiltingwolf...hope you get to go someday.

As I remember now you could take pic but couldn't post them on any social media sites. So you could only take pic for your own use. No posting on a blog, public photo site or in a forum like this one. So again no one gets to see them unless you buy the book. Now I certain a year from now we can see them. I've seen last years on pintrest etc. As I said if the quilters are getting some kick back from this fine. As I'm sure they had to sign something to be included in this book. I went to a local quilt show and I notice people taking pictures. I didn't cos I didn't know if you really could or not. With all the talk about copyright etc you never sure what you can do or not. Also to add if I had a quilt in show like this (and this will never happen) I wouldn't be on board with this book. I would be glad if someone like my work enough to copy it. Now if they started writing patterns and selling them without my permission/involvement then I would have a problem.

I tend to be a Pollyanna, but FWIW this may just be AQS trying to stay afloat. I would guess their magazine sales have gone down the toilet and they may be seriously financially struggling.

Point of comparison: I remember Houston Quilt Festival having certain parts of the quilt display allowing photographs and certain parts prohibiting them. No idea why or what the difference was.

you know honestly as far as copying goes, It would be a lot easier to copy something from a book you have right in front of you as opposed to a picture you see in passing. We all get inspired by each other's work. I wonder if there are restrictions on the quiltmakers themselves that they can't show their own work on their blogs etc. If I was that talented I would want people to see it and be inspired by it, not to be controlled by a show operator. Think I'm going to do some research to see what you have to agree to, to enter a quilt in one of these bigger shows.

Meredith Schroeder and her husband own a publishing company. They are the ones who started the AQS show in Paducah, and probably that company is who published the book of quilt show winners. Highly unlikely any of the quilters get a kickback, nor care. I wouldn't. Just having a quilt juried into that show is an honor.
