Re: Need help on Words and Characteristics of Upholstery Fabrics (posted on 8/28/13 11:55 AM ET)
I am looking for at least two words, I knew them last year and now they are gone. LOL

1. What is the name of the fabric that used to be on sofas and chairs, sort of a chenille, carved look, NEVER seemed to wear out? Wish I could think of the content, but is was most likely nylon. MY dh said that is not what I told him last year...I've slept since then and have NO idea what I said.

2. What is the harmful chemical that is/was released from furniture and carpeting when it burned? The chemical hung close to the floor when burned and that was a danger of choosing furniture/carpeting with that chemical in it as close to the floor is where people are told to go when there is a fire.

Yes, this is a quiz. The internet did not seemed to direct me correctly and I cannot find the answers. We are considering reupholstering a chair and would actually like some of the sturdy, vintage-look fabric. Thank you!

There's an old traditional mohair upholstery fabric that's woven a bit like a velvet and wears like iron. Nope, I can't think of the name and I haven't got the time to look right now.

This is going to drive me crazy--I know exactly what you are referring to--I can remember the feel of it, and a distinct smell. Someone in our family had a couch in this in a mossy green. I will keep looking...

2. Formaldehyde? It comes off most fabrics via the air and is worse when they are burned.

The two conversations did not connect to each other, except that I was trying to bring something out of my brain that was buried deeply.

I was in textile class about 33 years ago and the burning fabric was a topic then. It just came up again because my dh and I were discussing old furniture. :)

I just found this:
"FRIEZE OR FRISE’ – upholstery weight looped pile fabric often of nylon, which is very sturdy. May be Jacquard woven to achieve a sculptural or ribbed effect."

--sounds like the fabric I remember, but not the name I remember...
