can anyone give me a definition of 'pin stitch' please (Moderated by Deepika)

Heeeelllllllpppppp,
my daughter has an assignment and we've searched the net to no avail - we need a description of 'pin stitch'
one lead - in Aussie we call them 'pin tucks' - rows of parallel tucks (often made with twin needles) used as decoration on yokes of blouses etc.
but I suspect there is another definition - probably something to do with tiny little stitches in tailoring
can anyone shed some light for us
Many thanks

Helen...I've never heard the term 'pin stitch', but I would guess it could mean pintuck too.
I have to tell you, we've both had pintucks on the brain at the same time! lol I posted a tip about them exactly 10 minutes before you posted this subject. GMTA :)

I checked my sewing books, and the closest I can find would be, this..is it what you are looking for?
Pin -tack: "Several machine stitches in the same stitch, made by lifting the presser foot slightly so the fabric does not feed;used to reinforce machine stitching where the usual backstitching would be unsightly."

Pin stitching is an heirloom sewing term. It's basically a short, narrow blanket stitch that is stitched multiple times to make holes in the fabric. It is often used to finish the edges of Madeira applique. It can be done either by hand or by machine with a wing needle and fine thread. Here's what it looks like when it's finished:

This is what the actual stitches look like:

You can learn more about pinstitching and other heirloom techniques at www.heritageshoppe.com That's where I found these images.

Helen...I got curious and did a search at google.com for "pin stitch" [no quotes, but I did put a plus sign before stitch].
I found this example of a 'pin stitch' by machine.

thanks girls.... what a fantastic site
I really appreciate so many of you taking time to answer, I'm actually a textiles teacher and have found nothing in all the books I have at school - don't know where my daughters teacher found it!
Anyway - the assignment is due tomorrow and looks awsome - hope the marks reflect her efforts
cheers and many thanks
