how often do you get your serger serviced/tuned up/repaired? once a year? less? when it breaks? is $399 for 4 years of service worth getting? otherwise each trip in is about $170 i think.

My serger gets tuned up about every 2 years. Now that I work for a dealer, it will probably be every year because I know exactly when my servicing will be quick based upon how many machines are on the service shelves. I used to hate taking my machines in because I'd always hit a busy time. Waiting for up to two weeks for my machine is not to my liking. One time it was three weeks because there was such a backup before Christmas.

ETA, my serger gets a lot of use. As of this past summer, my younger daughter uses it too. My old Pfaff Hobbylock was tuned up once in the 18 years I owned it, but I didn't use it anywhere near as much as my BL. Too much time threading and fiddling with tensions on the Pfaff.

The owner where I purchased my serger told me that so long as I oil it regularly and vacuum it out, every 3 to 5 years is fine. Mine is a Bernina (mechanical) so unless I sew over a pin or the blades get dull, there is no need to bring it in every year.

I don't remember ever having mine serviced (mechanical Bernina, maybe 20 yrs old)

I did need a new part once, but I called the dealer and they sent it out to me by mail and I sent the old one back the same way. It was a couple weeks before Christmas and he knew I'd not want to wait for servicing...

Mine is a Bernette 007D (Juki). I have had it for 15 years. It has had a lot of use and I have never had it serviced. I clean and oil occasionally and change the lower blade myself periodically. It might be almost ready for a new upper blade and then I will have to take it in, as the bolt is so tight I can't loosen it. My advice is to just use some common sense when trying to serge extra thick fabrics and don't serge over pins!

I've never taken mine in, but they aren't that old. The Brother is about 2 yrs old and the BL is just over a year old. I keep them clean.

I've never taken any of mine, except the one that was the lemon and the one I broke the looper on. (totally my fault.) Keep them clean and oiled and replace the blades yourself.
I bought my first serger in 1984, and sold it to a co-worker in 2004. It ran like a champ and had never been to the shop.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. The last time I took a machine in for service because I thought it should be serviced on a routine basis, the tech just about ruined it with cleaning fluid. Changed dealers!

If you serge, or sew daily, you will "know" when any of your machines need a professional to give it a once over.

I took mine in this year in a $80 special with $25 in store coupon. Never had been in since purchase a few years ago. Was told about every 5 years. Anyway, it came back fine but probably a wasted trip. He found no problems- even the blade was fine. But I am good at keeping it clean at home. It's the Evolution- not computerized.

My motto is if it ain't broke don't fix it. However i do try to clean and oil mine regularly, but I do that myself.
