I would like to take a class in order to learn how to make a jacket. I've never made one before, nor have I sewed any project with linings, stay tape, or sleeve heads. I have, however, done collars, set-in sleeves, and buttonholes, so hopefully some of those skills would transfer.

I would like to make my jacket out of a light chambray (I live in Los Angeles, so it's rarely cold enough to need a wool jacket). I want it to be very fitted and flattering.

I am mostly considering two Craftsy classes: either Jacket Fitting Techniques or Tailoring the Classic Blazer. I really like the Craftsy platform because it allows you to jump to different topics easily and take notes in the video. However, I would consider classes on other websites (like the Angela Wolf blazer classes here on PatternReview) if people think they're the best for my purposes.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or thoughts!

I would take the Angela Wolf jacket muslin and beginner's jacket courses here on PR. I've taken her beginner's jacket course, and the techniques should transfer well enough to a cotton, while the Craftsy Tailoring the Classic Blazer shows you techniques best used on wool.

Another good one on Craftsy is the Islander /Sewing Jacket class with Janet Pray. I am taking that class right now and haven't started yet with sewing, but she is a great instructor. And the jacket is made of a lightweight cotton or denim, so it should work for you. And Janet tailors her comments to newbies and advanced sewists.

In addition to a paid class, you can look at the free webcasts that Peggy Segars offers at Silhouette patterns. Here is a cut and paste link:http://silhouettepatterns.com/html/media/livestreamchannel/index_replays.htm

The one on Jan 13, 2014 started a lined jacket. It continued on Jan 27,2014. You can check the other topics for other webcasts on jackets. The first 15 minutes of each webcast is spent on answering general sewing questions. Just scroll ahead if you don't want to see that. Some of PS webcasts show her new patterns, some show modifications, many work on fit and some discuss construction. Note that her patterns come in different cup sizes so she does not address FBA.

Thanks, I'll check it out! It would be great if I didn't have to pay for a class.

Thank you! I couldn't find too many reviews of that class, so it is good to hear from someone who has taken it. This will definitely be next on my list if the free videos aren't enough for me.

Thank you. I have thought about taking that class in order to learn the techniques--but in the class photos, the jacket looked like it was a bit loose-fitting and I was hoping to get a closer fit. Have you looked at the pattern yet? Does she give much info on fitting?

I'd love to know this too. The boxy fit of that jacket has prevented me from buying that class.

And Angela has an unlined jacket class on PR. That would probably be the best class for what you want to make.

Janet Pray doesn't give any advice on fitting, it's all about the sewing techniques, how to do it fast and efficiently (and without pins!). She's a great teacher, but this isn't a good class for a fitted blazer look.
