Certainly my mom and I can't be the only ones with this problem.
Each time we wear t-shirts, something from our jeans (the zipper?) makes tiny little holes in the shirt. Since I'm spending time making my shirts now, I'd like to avoid this problem! Any ideas? My t-shirts are usually cotton... maybe I should try something else? Underline the front with a different material? Help!
Thank you.
Ellen

Happens to me too, for me it is the belt that is the culprit. Apart from interfacing the part that rubs, I don't have any solution...

I have not had that happen with any of my jeans ever, but if it's really happening to both of you, and only right there, then maybe there is something rough or sharp in there. I think most jean zippers have some kind of fly over lap on the back of them to keep the metal off of you, but there are also all those jean rivets and such often at the top pockets and side seam intersection also. Maybe if they were sharp that could do something. Also just some knit is better (more expensive made maybe) on that than others, for even fabric abrasion maybe when something is worn tucked in.
But I don't think you should have to do anything special (when wearing or sewing anything) to keep that kind of stuff from happening, unless there is really something kind of unusual in a bad way, about your T-shirts or your jeans either.

Are you tucking in your shirts? I've never had this happen either, and I live in jeans/t-shirts for most of the year.
ETA: Maybe you could try a t-shirt pattern with a band on the bottom, so you'd have a double thickness of fabric in that area. I seem to recall that the sewaholic Renfrew has a band along the bottom, and I'm sure there are others out there like that.

I've never had it happen either. Rough edge on the button? But with it happening to both of you probably not.
The best thing I can come up with is how the shirts fit. Are they snug and constant friction/rubbing on the button is causing it?

I have the same problem on knit shirts and cotton woven shirts. I have several of my favorite shirts that have small holes near the waistline. I don't wear belts, so it can't be from that. My jeans and other pants have a button at the waistband. I don't tuck my shirts in either. Could it be from the zipper tab? I have tried fusing interfacing on the inside of my shirts under the holes but the interfacing has pulled off when washed. I would love to hear suggestions to correct this also!

It's consistent across any pair of jeans. I made a Renfrew and on its first wearing I had two or three holes. So upsetting! We tend to think maybe it's from leaning up against things like the counter or sink and catching the shirt on the zipper.
No, I don't tuck in.
I'll try nicer fabrics and different blends to see if that changes anything. If all else fails, I'll just keep wearing camisoles so they can take the brunt of contact.
Thanks.

I have this happen too. It has happened to both cotton and merino tees!
I think it is the corner of the waistband that is rubbing on the inside of the tee. I have interfaced a small square before repairing/darning my merinos, but have not interfaced pre-emptively.

I've heard of this before, but have not experienced it. One of my friends had this start to happen after she remodeled her kitchen...figured it was friction from her granite counter tops!

This happens to me all the time, for years, and in my case I know exactly what it is. I spend lots of time in the kitchen, and the edge of the countertop rubs my shirt against my jeans snap. My countertops were tile and very wide, rough grout. DH and I are two or three days away from our kitchen remodel completion...YAY!....so I will have to report back in the future if I still have the problem with smooth quartz countertops.
Side note: One day I was watching Rachel Ray's show and she mentioned getting holes in her shirts, in the same place, and couldn't figure it out. I wanted to e-mail her or something to tell her it's because she is rubbing against countertops all the time!
As far as preventing it on certain fabrics, I wish I knew too.
