I want to make this quilt pattern for my niece's first baby girl. This link will show you at least a few variations. I am going for the one with the ribbon and flower.
Do you think this quilt pattern will have more impact done as various shades of the same colour family ( as shown) or; can I use a jelly roll that has all kinds of colours and patterns going on?? I am a bit concerned that if I use a jelly roll, the "flower and ribbon" might lose it's impact. IMHO, that is what makes the quilt so cute.
The jelly roll I have is Ticklish by Moda fabrics, Me and My Sisters. Here is link for Ticklish.
Thanks!

Imho, I think the Ticklish jelly roll would work wonderfully!! It has several patterns & colors that will piece together beautifully. How fun to design & sew this together!!! What a lucky girl to receive it!!

I'd use the jelly roll and put a big purple bow on it- that would really show up. I think you should go for it.

I think it will look great with the jelly roll you've chosen. Do it!

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.

Yes! Some jelly rolls wouldn't work well, but this one looks like it will!

Thanks all!! I have a really hard time envisioning several fabrics together so I wasn't sure. I laid them all out and forced myself to organize them by contrast rather than co-ordinating colours (my natural instinct). That is when I started to panic a bit.
I was thinking maybe a dark purple for the "ribbon" too!!
I am going to look for flannel for the ribbon if I can find it in both good quality and the right colours just to give the quilt some texture. (I have heard it is good for the baby to have different textures.) And flannel for the back too. Sigh... it is getting harder and harder to find good quality flannel where I live.
I hope it turns out. I am so nervous. I have to remember that I am doing this for me first (learning experience) and if turns out well - then it can be a gift!! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!!

This is just me, but I wouldn't mix flannel with cotton, at least not to use the flannel as backing. Flannel can shrink a LOT, which would be my primary concern.

Oh.... Even if I shrink the flannel by pre-washing and drying it??
I made a little quilted mat for my dog and I mixed cotton and flannel and I really liked it. The squares are flannel and the outer borders and the gridline stripes outlining the squares (ack..... you think I can remember the correct term right now???) are cotton. But overall it has more flannel than cotton.
This is what happens when you don't know any better!!

The Quilt shop I usually go to will probably tell me the same thing when I bring in my sewn strips to pick the ribbon fabric. At least there is way more choice in cottons that flannels.

As long as you prewash the flannel you should be fine. I do that lots and I like to use Minkee as a backing for little ones as well!
Your fabric choice is a GREAT one. I LOVE the pattern, I think I might have to purchase that one! I would love to make it for my GRANDdaughter! I could make one with a little boy's theme for my GRANDson that is due this fall!! They are just too cute!!
Make sure you post pictures!
