DH and I are planning to meet up with MIL this year to see the fall colors. She'll fly into Maine and we'll drive up from DC to meet up with her, then taking a leisurely drive back down. When are the leaves usually showing their best? How has this summer's weather been and how will it affect our timing of the trip? Any particularly beautiful spots that warrant a stop? We're fairly flexible schedule wise but we plan to take our German shepherd with us so doggy friendly areas are preferred. TIA!

Maine Foliage chart

If you plan your trip a bit later, then you can go further south.

Not familiar with Maine but I know in PA it's mid October. Don't forget when going north that snow can make an early arrival too.

Maine is a fairly large state for New England and the climate varies from north to south and from east to west with the ocean making the coast much warmer than it is inland. And then there is elevation which effects foliage too. So where you will be traveling will determine when the best time is to plan your trip or when you will be traveling can determine where you will be going if peak foliage is your goal. And then some years are earlier than others and some years are more beautiful than others. I used to live in Maine so I know this through experience. I now live in Vermont. Peak foliage season moves from north to south and from high elevations to lower elevations in Vermont too, just no ocean effect. In other words there is no easy answer to your question.

There are so many factors involved from daylight hours to rainfall to temperatures. Last year colors lasted 1 day because of hurricane! then the leaves were on the ground. End of Sept. to the beginning of Oct. means you'll be there when all the other leaf peepers are there.

Hmm, sounds like we'll just have to do the best to plan and hope everything goes our way! I can't wait for fall to come, I am definitely not a summer person. Thanks for all the input!

Here are some images I captured while visiting Boston in 2010. I took these while driving south of Boston through Rhode Island on some back roads between 9 am and 11 am on Oct 14th. While the colors had barely changed in Boston they were fully into it a short drive to the south:

Your pictures are beautiful, but last I looked Rhode Island was south of Boston.
I'm teasing you.
Your pictures truly are beautiful.
