My 9 yo niece has become interested in sewing little crafts, and I found a really nice sewing book to send her. I would also like to include tools and supplies to get her started, but I'm unsure of which scissors to send. A lot of kid-safe scissors are not very effective at cutting fabric---very frustrating for beginning sewers! Adult sized tools are too large for her small hands.

Any ideas?

I got the Fiskers Student scissors for my then 7 year-old GD for her sewing lessons.
They work well and have more rounded ends.
JoAnns or Walmart have them.

i would buy kid safe scissors for a five year old. A nine year old is probably old enough to be smart about not stabbing herself or her siblings in the eye when using scissors. I have had my students ( often age 12) buy scissors at the dollar store but use them only for fabric. Ikea also sells decent enough scissors. I would add a tag to the scissors that reads " Use me ONLY for fabric" The inexpensive scissors will last until she is ready for really good scissors or is bored with sewing.

Thank you, both, for the good ideas!
