Hi all, I just finished my first ITH project and can see why they are so addicting. ;-) I used a medium weight tearaway and that worked fine. Then I saw that another designer recommended using wash away stabilizer. So what do you like to use? Any favorite scissors or trimming tips? I used my Gingher appliqué scissors and they worked pretty well.

PS -- The project I made was a freebie from Embroidery Garden a monster for our DGS.

It probably depends on the type of project for in the hoop. In your case, with the softie - what you used seems appropriate. If the back of the project was to show, then I would think a wash away would be the correct thing to use. I'm pretty new to embroidery and what stabilizer to use for each project. When I want to know what is best to use, I Google and most times this site comes up. Good information to have.

Most really good digitizers will tell you what kind of stabilizer for ITH projects. I've used tear away, wash away, and polymesh depending on the project. I've also used the drainage non woven stuff from Home Depot for ITH bibs.

I agree that ITH projects are addicting - I am fascinated by them. They tend to be my go to for a quick hostess gift (potholders) and kid's gifts (crayon holders) and small and large changepurses, etc. I love the ones in which the zipper is inserted ITH. As for scissors, I have a few favorites and each works differently. I like the Gingher applique, the Inspira curved tip and also the Havel Double Curved applique scissors.

Havels embroidery scissors. The one that has a bent scissor to access the hoop. I, too, love ITH.

I know this is unorthodox, but I often use my Stretch and Sew "Do-Sew" interfacing/pattern tracing stuff. For a lot of the ITH, with all the layers, you don't need heavy stabilization in the end. The Do-Sew is very light and doesn't add more bulk, and it is super cheap!

I was wondering what to do with the one good hooped project I have done. I was thinking of framing it.

Since you make yours and give them away, what fabrics do you use? Could you show a picture of one you made?

Zippers in the hoop??? How in the world could that be done?

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.

Here is a video, zipper in the hoop.

There are ITH freebies online to try out in the hoop embroidery designs, the instructions,(or even picture tutorials are usually included in the download),or posted at the site.Just search Google for free embroidery designs, quite often there are one or more free ITH embroidery designs included.Or search free ITH embroidery designs.

Not all free embroidery designs are bad ! I'm currently embroidering ITH finger puppet freebies for our neighbor's two small children.

Here is a free picture tutorial on how to embroider an ITH sewing accessory zippered pouch. On another forum is a free ITH needle case link. I have a similar freebie pouch in my embroidery files in my PC.

The finished pouch measures 6.25” x 4.25”, a great size for all the little sewing accessories you want to keep together. This is easy to do and makes great gifts for your sewing friends or for your craft fair.

Five star fonts has a couple of free small zipper cases ITH if you'd like to try. Can't tell you how many zipper cases I've done ITH - made a slew of them for my DD's shower as favors.
