I am a new quilter and the 100% cotton fabrics I am using are fraying badly. Since I've already pieced the top (all strips) and this is a quilt to be raffled, I really want to be sure it doesn't fall apart in the wash.

Am I safe to use Fray Check or should I overedge? I did overedge several seams, but this will take a lot of time. If it's the best option, then that's what I'll do but wanted to ask before I go any further.

Thank you,
Sharon

Fray check makes fabric stiff and is not invisible. I wouldn't use it for this purpose.

I don't like it much either and I'm not sure if it eventually washes out. Overedging will be time consuming but probably my safest option. I was just curious what other options other quilters might use.

Thank you!

Where did you buy your fabric? Some brands ravel worse than others. I love moda, but it sure ravels on me. Usually about the time the top is completely pieced.

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.

I would do neither... once the quilt is sandwiched and quilted the underside of the top is stabilized. I do find some fabrics fray more that others. Starch can be used as a stabilizer of sorts... I starch fabric before I cut and get definitively less fraying.

I bought the fabric from a local Ben Franklin Craft store. I've purchased there before and had no problem. I may have handled this fabric more during the piecing process. I did not pre-wash it.

Pre-washing is not always necessary... not with the way cotton is manufactured today, but it is a personal preference for some. But do be careful when you piece to minimize fraying. Also, when pressing blocks be sure to press them and not to iron as this too can contribute to fraying and block distortion.

Are you using very small machine stitches?
That may be all that is needed.

Press the top then, on the backside use iron-on Tricot interfacing.

When you do the quilting, echo stitch close to the seam, catching the seam allowance.

Make sure the sales person includes the wrapper with the Tricot manufacturer's instruction for the application.

Make a little sample quilt for testing all the "ingredients", including stitch length for piecing as well as quilting.

My only choice of quilt fabric is Moda. I have never had an issue with fraying/unraveling. I don't pre-wash my fabrics so that may be the cause.
