I am unabashedly a coupon user and discount shopper. I understand that JoAnn's, Hancock's, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's will honor (sometimes?) each other's coupons and sales. I want to understand how to use this to my advantage.

I have JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's all within an easy driving distance. Hancock's is a couple of hours drive.

I have used JoAnn's pattern sale at Hobby Lobby. I just showed the sale ad (the paper) at the register and Hobby Lobby honored JoAnn's pattern sale price.

I have used a Michael's coupon at JoAnn's. I just mentioned it to the register operator. I didn't even have one, they knew about it and honored it. 40% savings. Not bad.

But I haven't tried a Hancock's pattern sale price at JoAnn's because Hancock's is so far away. I used to get Hancock's ads in the mail, but I don't any more. Wish I did. Hancock's does not have an app of any sort, but they will send a text message with a coupon code and you can look at their sale ad on a smart phone. Will JoAnn's honor the text message, or a printed out email coupon? Will JoAnn's honor a Hancock's pattern sale in the printed ad if you just show it to them on your cell phone?

Does anyone have any tips to using these store's coupons or using them at a competitor? Let's share our knowledge and maybe everyone can benefit.

I think that any of this (or using any of these coupons at Walmart who claims to honor competitors' coupons) depends on the intelligence and attitude of the managers and cashiers at the store where you want to use the coupon!

So what one store will do, may or may not be what works in another state/town, even at the same type of store.

If it is store policy and you have proof - a print out from their own website - then they must honor it. Or they should. I had to bring a print out of Hobby Lobby's own FAQ's from their own website to prove to the store workers that they did indeed accept and honor competitor's coupons.* The manager was aware of it, at least he said he knew, but the store register operators did not know it until after I showed them.
They asked to keep my print out.

ETA: Most of these stores are nationwide and follow a nationwide policy. If they don't, then, of course, you have to do what you are most comfortable with when trying to get a store to abide by their own stated policies. I am comfortable talking to store managers when I have proof in my hands.

*ETA: This is incorrect. They don't accept competitor's coupons, but they do price match for exact same items.

JoAnn's Price Match Pledge as of 10/28/2014:

from http://www.joann.com/faqs.html#PriceMatchPledgeInfo
Quote:

Q: What is Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores Price Match Pledge?
A: Joann.comŽ does offer a price match policy. Seasonal items do not qualify for price adjustments. Patterns on Joann.comŽ are not eligible for price match with a Jo-Ann Store price. Please note that pricing may be different between the web site and Jo-Ann Stores for many reasons, including the timing of promotional events and product source. The Price Match Pledge will be honored on Joann.comŽ in U.S. Dollars (USD). Please see your local Jo-Ann Store location for their posted Price Match Pledge. Joann.comŽ will match prices when the following conditions are met:

* Applies to identical, in-stock item only
* Price to match must have been advertised within the past 7 days
* Includes ads for competitors
* Requires proof of lower price via original/current ad or print-out of online price
* Excludes special buys, liquidations, doorbusters and club purchase

According to this, you should check your local JoAnn's store for their posted Price Match Pledge. I'm not sure I've ever seen a "posted" Price Match Pledge, but you can bet I will sure be looking for one the next time I go.

I've used Hobby Lobby, Hancocks, AC Moore, and Michaels coupons at JoAnn. They accept anybody's coupons for the same stuff--ie, you can't use a michaels coupon for fabric, only craft items bc michaels doesn't really sell fabric. The other stores will take only one coupon per purchase from what I've experienced. JA will take as many as possible for the # of non sale items in the transaction.

Thanks for the information.

Did you have coupons that you received in the mail, or did you have coupons that you printed out at home? Or coupons on a smart phone?

What about the "price matching" part of the equation? For example: Things that are on sale at one store (like thread, patterns, interfacing?). Can you just show a print out of the ad? Something that you printed at home? Or on your smart phone? I would love to know how these things are treated.

I'm asking these questions in the hopes that the answers will help someone besides myself. I know I am not the only one who could benefit from this info.

I can't speak for price matching because I have never done it. I imagine a current sales ad or price as shown on your cell phone would do it.

I have used competitor printed coupons, mailer coupons, email coupons (both printed and off my phone screen), and app coupons at JA. None were denied for anything except not.enough items or doesnt apply to the item. HTH!!

That's interesting. I was told at my local Hobby Lobby that they won't price match. I'll have to check their website to see if they have a published policy.

I basically maximize Joann's coupons. I don't shop at Hobby Lobby much for fabrics. I know that you can use multiple coupons in the same transaction as long as they come from different sources or have different numbers. I've noticed recently the app doesn't always have good coupons. I had gotten lazy about carrying my ad because usually the same coupons would be in the app. Not so recently. But I discovered that I can pull up the website on my smart phone and there's usually a coupon or two on there. I've also signed up for text messaging so I get coupons that way also. And If you sign up for emails, there's usually a coupon at the very bottom of the email.

Oh and the little magazines they sell with the coupons on the back. They went up a dollar. Did anyone notice?

I printed this out and took it with me to Hobby Lobby. I don't generally go to Hobby Lobby but they had patterns in stock that Joann's did not have yet. Joann's was having the sale.

Hobby Lobby price match policy

So they price match, but they don't honor competitor's coupons. Interesting distinction. I was trying to price match, but not use a coupon at Hobby Lobby.

ETA: I edited my previous post because I misspoke about the coupons. :)

In the past I've used my phone app for coupons at Jo Anns, Hobby Lobby, etc... However, I've recently started cutting out the mailer coupons and comparing them and they are much better than the ones on my phone.

For example, I have a few Jo Ann's coupon sitting in front of me for 60% one regular price fabric cut and two 25% off of my total purchase. Meanwhile, my phone app shows nothing but their regular priced framing prices....errr I mean their 65% off custom framing.
