That moment I,have occassionally pondered for the last seven years has happened: I turned on my machine to darkness. My bulb burned out. JA only carries push in, and mine is a screw in so I ordered one from Wawak. I have my fingers crossed that it'll fit! Are all bulbs generally made to a standard? Or do they differ on brand like machine feet do?

The woman at our crafts store said that s.m. bulbs are either push in or screw in, and that's it. Hopefully, she is correct. I didn't have a problem when I bought a replacement.

Good news, GL! I will keep my fingers crossed
Skae, the two stores I checked didn't have what I needed. I am working two jobs at 70+hrs per week, so checking more stores is really impractical. I am hoping Wawak pulls through!
(Though oddly this has been a weird order. I ordered before noon yesterday, it was processed at midnight and my shipping info hasnt updated yet. Usually I have it by now!)

There are different sized bases on both the bayonet (push in) and screw in type bulbs. Also, some older machines have/had different shaped (usually narrower/skinner) bulbs that fit the light bulb area. There was no difference in wattage etc. just less heat build up (especially important in plastic housings) around the bulb. Best option is always to bring the burned out bulb with you to a dealer and they can match the base that way.

Here in Australia it's much cheaper to purchase a bulb from an auto accessories store. I've only ever had to purchase two (one for a sm and the other for my overlocker) and they've both lasted two and two and a half times that of the bulbs they replaced.

I have gotten replacement bulbs at Lowes as well as the auto shops.

Huh! Fascinating. I will check the auto store next time! (In another seven years....lol
) Turned out the Wawak bulb was waaaay too huge but I had to go to the store for a button. I managed to randomly find one tucked away where the employees said they didn't carry any. Go figure. *eyeroll* I should know better than to trust the employees where the woman decided she had to instruct me on what interfacing was after I had asked for it by name.

Yes, go to hardware store with said bulb and they can help you next time. Would you believe I have never had to change a sewing machine bulb in all the years I have been sewing?! That's about (horrors) 50+ years. And yes, that includes my 37 year old Pfaff.
