Hello to sewing and knitting friends in the great NW,

My boyfriend and I are going up to visit three wonderful friends up in Portland. We are going to be traveling by train(Amtrak) and using a friends car or using the public transportation.

What would be the best places for us to visit? G. can not walk or hike for too long, but I know that we are going to want to go and explore! Please include any yarn or fabric shops, as well as any wonderful Museums. I know that we are going to have to go to Voodoo Donuts and I would love to check out Powell's Home and Garden Bookshop. We are going to be there for six days and want to have a happy trip! Or and if there are any places to find a Singer featherweight sewing machine at a reasonable price.

Thank you!!

Powell's Books is a must see. A trip to Multnomah Falls is a great day trip. The Japanese Gardens are wonderful! OMSI is fun, and I think the submarine display is still there.
Have fun Jenn...bring warm clothing and a raincoat.

I second the trip to Multnomah Falls and the other waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge! Spectacular.

You'll still be in time for Portland's famous Saturday Market (also open on Sundays), which runs until Christmas Eve. Along with Powell's and the International Rose Test Gardens (which could very well still be blooming like crazy in November!), it's really one of the must-see/must-do attractions in Portland.

Palmer/Pletsch are in Portland, along with a good selection of fabric stores.

Do tuck in a visit to the Portland Art Museum up on the Art Blocks. And, if you are there on a weekend, there is a good craft street fair near the museum. Now, I thought you wanted directions to Mill End Fabrics or Bolt or ... ;-) And don't forget the food trucks; Portland is a mecca for them. The Pearl district is fun for contemporary shopping too.

I thought that Voodoo donuts were good, but not worth the hour+ wait for a donut when I went.

If you sew any sort of athletic or outdoorswear, Rose City Textiles is a must visit.

Mill End is an amazing fabric store--the biggest I've been in. They have a bit of everything and prices are reasonable.

The Portland area has a lot of other fabric stores, but I haven't made it to many others yet.

I am unsure how much fabric I want to bring home. But, I just love all of the other suggestions. Yes, Gil is aware of how much fabric that I have. Now, yarn that is another story.. But I would love to go to the Pendelton Wool fabric shop! Just to see what they have. If I could find a small piece, I am sure that I could make a marvelous little something out of it. Oh, and I did happen to find out that one of the stores has an enormous amount of Liberty of London fabrics. If they happen to have the fleece that I want, that is going to be my special souvenir from this trip.

While Voodoo donuts gets alot of hype, Heavenly Donuts and Annies donuts taste way better. Heavenly Donuts
Another good place for breakfast for lunch is Pine State Biscuits.

If you're thinking about going to Rose City, double check if they're open. They're a small business and often close for holiday weekends.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

If you think you'll get to the Pendleton outlet, check out their website first. They have an interesting assortment of things - yardage and also smaller cuts of fabric, ultrasuede and rolls of their ultrasuede binding, a true outlet with regular shipments of new goodies announced online. Prices range all over the map too.
