Disclosure: Yes, I am being whiny.
While admittedly, I have really liked everything I've made from one of them...I cannot stand the envelope backs of these patterns.
envelope back
ALL I want to know is if I have enough fabric. But first, I must dissect the coat into 2500 elements (see whiny above) and figure out every tiny, minute detail, and then perhaps I can estimate yardage.

Alrighty...whining is done...for now.

Oh, this is an excellent rant! I totally agree with you.
It's entirely too much work to figure it all out. I've decided guesstimating is about as accurate as their suggestions.

I usually look at the largest fabric amount, and add a yard. This one, if I wanted the collar, I'd of bought 5 yards and called it a day.

How funny. Usually I'm taking patterns apart anyway, and it drives me bonkers when they *combine* elements I consider totally separate! LOL "I only want to make the skirt! Don't tell me how much I need for the skirt AND collar!"
You can't please everybody. :D

Good point Kwaaked. Buy the most possible amount of fabric that you might need.

What I don't understand is why sleeves are an option. It is a coat! It must have sleeves!! The sleeve yardage should be included in the base coat yardage.

Well, one is for long sleeves and one is for 3/4 sleeves, so it's 1 yard and 3/4 yard, IIRC the back (I didn't pull it back up though). This is one of the options on it.

I think it's because it's a project runway pattern, and they give you all that "design your own version stuff" inside, and so then they don't have room on the pattern envelope back to list out all the possible combinations they suggest as yardage per view at that point, because the envelope back is not large enough to squeeze all that on there. As in no fields/ran out of fields to even put it into like normal, unless font got smaller and then maybe no one could read it?
But I think it's a very valid rant, because the back of that pattern envelope looks like a real confusing mess to me too. But, I think a lager pattern envelope(with more space for printing on it) and then doing it more normal as listing more views for complete yardage, would probably fix that.

I'm with stirswaters on this one. I love the fact that they went to the trouble to list each element and its yardage. I get annoyed when I have to dissect style elements and guess. Yep, Very Easy Vogue, I am talking to you.

There are 3 different sleeve options so I guess you buy the amount associated with the sleeve you intend to make. However I do feel like that's over-engineering the process. And typically when they piece-mill the requirements to you, you end up over-buying.
