wrong code on stretch needles? (Moderated by Sharon1952)
Posted on: 2/15/15 7:53 PM ET
I recently purchased some Schmetz 75/11 stretch needles at Joanne's and my auto threader on my Bably Lock serger didn't want to thread the new needles. I looked a little closer and discovered that the color code dot on the needles is red. The previous needles had yellow dots and, according to online charts, red dots are on embroidery needles.
I've sent a message to Schmetz, but I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this? Has the coding changed recently, or do I have mis-packaged embroidery needles? I certainly don't want to damage my machines. eek.

Get a magnifying glass, and see if there's any information engraved into the needle.

If you have an IPad you can download a free ap that shows the colors on the needles. Recent needles have 2 narrow bands of color: 1 for type of needle and the other for size.

Is it possible the needle was not pushed up all the way? That once happened to me and I had skipped stitches as a result.

Also, besides the possibility of the needle not all the way up, I read that you should also check the eye of the needle.
If the eye is smaller than a certain size, it won't work.
And, it won't work on double needles either.

Oops. just checked my Schmetz needles. They're stretch but the engraving just says "Schmetz 75/11". You either have to go by the yellow stripe, or the shape of the needle. Since your needles have red stripes, I suggest you study the eye and point, carefully.
Embroidery needles are sharp, Stretch needles are blunter.

Can an auto threader be used on size 75 needles?

I've had a similar issue with my Viking D2. I didn't think too much of it. I did reset the needle. It seems the finer the needle, the less likely it will work. I sort of fhrug my shoulders and saint to thread.
On the other hand, when my auto threader doesn't work on universal needles, it's about time for a service visit.

Thank you everyone for your responses, all a very helpful! I looked at the needles under the magnifier this morning and there is indeed a faint yellow dot above the "pink" one (which I thought was red). Regarding whether or not an auto-threader will work with 75/11 needles, my Babylock Serger always threaded them with ease, however my Bernina sewing machine will not thread anything smaller than an 80/12. FYI, I had a response from Schmetz waiting in my mailbox this morning...hows that for great customer service!
