Hi there!
I have one of these tops:
Wildfox pullover

I love it because it's soft, warm & washable.

Since I recently made a top using ponte, I got the impression that maybe these tops were made using ponte, but were distressed, something like what designers do with denim, to give the finished garment a broken in look.

When I looked at the fabric contents: 47% Rayon, 47% Polyester, 6% Spandex, I thought "Aha!" but I have no idea on how to create the distressed look. Would anyone have some suggestions?

TIA

It looks to me like it's already pilling, LOL, which is why I don't use many rayon knits anymore. The ponte I like best is 69% nylon, 26% rayon, and 5% spandex. As to how to encourage pilling, well, I imagine washing and drying several times might encourage it, since friction seems like it would cause that. Maybe others will have more suggestions for you.

Thank you dmh1. I have some leftovers from a top so I guess I'll experiment.

I don't see much distressed about it, the sweat shirt, but if you just want the surface of something, kind of "roughed up" then I guess you could rub a pumice stone or some sandpaper over it.

I don't see a distressed look to the top. It actually looks like nothing more than sweatshirt fleece which is soft and warm to wear.

You're not really going to be able to get a true distressed look to ponte. It's usually done with something that roughens the surface like sandpaper. I think the best you're going to get on ponte is pilling.

Try talking real mean to it: call it names, accuse it of being an ugly color, tell it that it was a fashion mistake from the minute it came off the machine.

If that doesn't distress that ponte, it's too tough to bother with.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

It looks to me like a sweatshirt made inside out so the pilling is on the outside.

The description says 'fleece'! It is not ponte.

Absolutely loving my Janome 500e embroidery machine, very creative. Problem with all my stash for clothing!

Erin, what does the sweatshirt look like on the inside? I think Patty's right about it being made inside out.
