I am comfortable sewing in vinyl zippers and just sew slowly over the teeth, but have never sewn in a metal zippers. It feels equivalent to sewing over dozens of pins in one spot, which I would never do...any tips on sewing over the metal teeth?

I usually shorten my metal zippers by pulling the metal teeth out with pliers. That prevents me needing to sew over any metal bits. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're doing, which is definitely possible!

Stout are not actually sewing over any teeth - correct? You pull out any teeth that will fall under your sewing line? This is exactly what I was worried about and I think this answers my question. Are the teeth normally easy to pull out? I'm excited about the idea of using never metal zipper in a bag but was intimidated about anchoring it in, but I think you explained it to me. Wish me luck!

Ditto, I use pliers or wire cutters to remove the teeth at the top of the zipper tape (and try to save the stopper to re-attach) never sew over the bottom of a metal zipper.
You can google "how to shorten metal zipper" for videos on how to remove the zipper teeth.

That's correct, I never sew over the teeth on metal zippers. I don't find it particularly difficult to pull out the teeth. You just have to grip the right part of the metal and if you do that it's not too bad. Looks like you've got some recommendations for tutorials - I'd use those or google "how to shorten a metal zipper". Good luck and I'm sure you'll be fine!

We had a thread on this recently. You can also just cut off the zipper at the bottom. This is easier than pulling teeth.
You put a few stitches where you cut the zipper to act as a zip stop.

Oops, forgot what I was going to put here.

I will watch the video tonight, but cannot access YouTube from work. You are actually "shortening" the zipper as opposed to sewing over it, correct? I am excited to give this a try. I normally just sew right over my zippers without needing to shorten them, so this will be a change in technique for me. Thank you so much!

Michelle,
Any tips on which part of the tooth is the right part? I am in the process of making the Islander Motor City jacket (taking the Crafsty class) which requires pulling teeth from the zip. I bought a tool just for that & also used a needle nose plier. I watched Janet Pray on the Craftsy class pull the teeth & it didn't look too hard. Well, even my DH had a heck of time getting the teeth off. I watched a couple You Tube videos and they didn't struggle any where near what I did to get the teeth off. Maybe I'm not grabbing the tooth at the right part.
