About to add a chunky open ended zip to a kid's hoodie. I'm still nervous about doing zips. More practice needed . . .
And also I dread hems. But that's more because I find them boring. The garment is almost finished . . . buuuut there's that hem waiting to be done. I just want to get it over. It's not as exciting as sewing in a sleeve or joining up seams but if it doesn't get proper attention it looks dodgy.

Good luck with your zipper and finishing off your hem
it will be a breeze after a few tries.
I personally love every single process of constructing a garment. It's so addictive!

Thanks Birdy. I can see I'm going to have to make friends with hems!
I love most other aspects.

When I have a hem that will be sewn by hand (because some projects are okay with a machine-stitched hem), I often do that at night in front of the TV with DH. At least I can do that part of my sewing while watching a TV show we both enjoy.
Just jump in and do it. It's only fabric. I know... I get emotionally attached to the stuff, too, and the expen$e of a wadder , but it is only fabric. It's not world peace. It's not the economy. Just fabric. I tell myself that each big mistake or wadder (and I continue to make those!!! Just had one this week!!!) is a learning opportunity.

I had a mare inserting chunky pocket zips into a stretchy softshell jacket, had to order 2 new zips and recut the front piece of the jacket - have now decided it doesn't need front pockets anyway
Colette patterns website has an excellent invisible zipper tutorial, they may have a standard zip one too?
I hear you on the hems as well - not having a dress form makes it tricky to get the hems even and I can never quite seem to get them pucker- free.

I assume when you say zip you mean zipper?
I've never had a problem with installing zippers for some odd reason. I know that some find it helpful to use a basting tape to hold them in place before sewing.
I like the hemming part, because I know that IS the last step to a finished project. LOL

So your packages read Zip instead of Zipper?

I saw today that Angela Wolf has a new Craftsy class on basic sewing that includes information on zippers. Perhaps you could consider that?
