How extensive are embroidery features re: additional software programs? (Moderated by Pyrose)

What, if anything, will be gained by using software such as Everyday Works, Embrilliance Essentials, etc? Or are the features on board the Destiny comparable without adding more (expensive) software? Thanks.

Good question! I've just always had embroidery software, Designers Gallery came with my Babylock Ellageo back in the day----and I've added to it as needed.
Primarily I use Designers Gallery Studio for downloading, sorting my designs on my laptop that I keep in the sewing room. Once I download a design from the internet, then I can open it in Studio. I also have Everyday Works Advanced, and I don't use it much unless I'm combining designs, adding fonts, recoloring etc.
In addition I have some other Designers Gallery programs. Quilt Label works and Letter Works.
I just recently download Thumbnailer from Embrillance, but I don't like it as much with Windows 8.1 as I did with Windows 7. It is supposed to allow you to see all your downloaded embroidery designs in your different embroidery file folders, but sometimes it works well with Windows 8.1, other times not. I also have to click "view" and in Files of 8.1 and the largest view each time I open the files. Sort of annoying…. I have a new laptop with Windows 8.1, so it could me, or Windows 8.1. In any case, it's an OK program for viewing designs, but I use Studio to unzip an view designs most of the time.
I wouldn't buy any software if you are new to embroidery or your Destiny machine until you do a lot of research, and also learn the capabilities of your Destiny, and what it offers sitting right at the machine.
I don't digitize, so I've never used any digitizing program. I have and older version of Palette which also came with the purchase of my embroidery machine. But, digitizing is not my thing when there are so many, many online sites to purchase ready made designs. So, Palette ---I used once, and now it's just collecting dust.
Really, it is all about what your machine embroidery evolves into…what you do, or plan to do. How interested are you learning computer programs and using them.
Don't rush---it all takes time to sort out.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I totally agree with you as to doing the research thoroughly before going any further software wise. I have been sewing all my life, and quilting for most of it, but have little experience with machine embroidery. The Destiny seems to have most of the capabilities that you mentioned in other software, but I need to discover to what extent it is there. For instance, I downloaded a design from an internet site that was the face of a dog with four initials underneath it. When I mirror imaged it as I want to use the design for corner posts in a quilt, the letters were backwards. I have tried to edit the mirror image to enable reversing the script but the Destiny doesn't seem to allow that to happen. All of the edit features that would be needed are greyed out. Very annoying. I cannot find any information that would help me to know if Destiny does allow that kind of manipulation or not. I am wondering if this is truly a limitation of Destiny and if other software would better address this kind of manipulation.
Again, thanks so much for your very helpful reply.

The machine sees you imported embroidery as one image not separate elements, that's why it reverses the entire image. You may be able to separate the text.
I don't have it in front of me and I have the dream machine but there is a separate key it has abc with a needle through it. That may separate your text elements allowing you to edit text.
I think that is what it's for. The only thing I can't remember is if it's for any embroidery or just ones created/combined on the machine. Should be in the editing patterns section of the manual.
I agree with Angie Rose take your time before you invest in embroidery software to see how much you'll use it and for what type of editing. I'm a confessed embroidery software tragic so I've tried a few and wish I hadn't. But your destiny should be able to do a lot of the editing function and a lot of text creating functions that you want without buying any software.

Are you in Embroidery Edit when trying to mirror image?

I find software to be an essential component if you want to split designs or merge elements of one design into another. I have the comparable Brother Dream machine, and although the machine editing is wonderful, it can't do what full-fledged software can do. That being said, I'd start out with the machine and add software when (or if) needed. Some people will never need software and for others it will be absolutely essential. It just depends on what one does with embroidery.

Thanks. I didn't see anything in the manual that seemed helpful. And I am going to the machine now to locate the key you describe. Hopefully that will help. But I, too, am concerned that perhaps it will not work on imported commercial designs. Many thanks, though, for your suggestions.

I was in the Embroidery Edit program. While I was able to mirror the image, I was not able to edit the mirrored image. That being said, the machine is absolutely amazing.! Thanks again.

I am spending most of my waking hours with the Destiny (wonderful machine) and it's manual. Have downloaded a couple of software demos and going through those with the associated online classes and tutorials to begin to gage the differences between what is onboard the Destiny and what else is covered in the other software. While I am new to the embroidery enjoyments these machines offer, and I don't want to overbuy software, I definitely do want to be able to accomplish fairly extensive manipulation of designs to fit my needs. So far I have not ferreted out any info in the Destiny manual re splitting designs. Thanks for your comments. I now know a specific to look for in Destiny.

I don't have a Destiny, but I understand your image must be already set or merged as an entire image with text. So, I don't think you can edit any parts of it in the machine at this time except to mirror or enlarge/decrease. Sorry.
I've seen the Destiny and the Dream Machine, and yes, they are amazing!
