Duchess satin silk and interlining (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 5/29/15 5:42 PM ET
Hi,
I am repurposing part of a duchess silk wedding gown into an infant girl christening gown. My research indicates to hem it to an interline and my question is exactly how do you treat the edge of the silk with interline at the hem?
I also have another question but will post it separately re cutting duchess silk on a bias.
Thanks so much!

I'm m not sure if I've understood correctly what you're doing, but this is what I think. If I were doing this project, I'd hand baste the underlining to the fashion fabric, and then treat it is one fabric and assemble the dress. When hemming, I'd probably turn up a quarter inch and then fold the hem up again to the final dress length. Then I'd catch stitch the silk of the hem to the underlining fabric of the dress.

Elephun is right - the only thing I would add is when turning up the hem to press it at each turn of the hem.
BTW - underlining = interlining - same thing different name.
I have never made a christening gown with bias cut fabric - does it need the extra give ?

Hi Arlene,
I am sorting through this design dilemma. For my granddaughter, my daughter found a lovely empire christening gown pattern that is suitable for a lighter silk ...it has Semi full to full gathers....while our fabric is the duchess silk....gorgeous, solid drape, but not ideal for gathering. So I thought how can I achieve a flowing, semi full look that would work. It is troubling....... so am bouncing ideas about a circular skirt, box pleats, panels, anything that could be a nice compromise. Can also create a small separate crinoline. Am very open to suggestions. Size is 6-9 months.

Anytime I have underlined a garment, I have machine basted it at the outer edge, inside what will be the seam line, and treated it as one fabric. There is a bit of a difference between underlining and interlining, though. Here

When in this situation with an heirloom garment, I bind the hem edge with a Hong Kong seam and then catch stitch to the underlining. It's a lovely finish.
Arlene, box pleats would be lovely. This is silk taffeta and regular pleats.
