for me it depends on what I'm thinking of doing with it. My minimum (unless I'm thinking of a handbag or something like that) is 2 metres - depending on width, that will get me a top, either a shell or a t-shirt (I'm plus sized, so 1 metre won't do me any good).
If it's a bottom weight, I'll usually get 3 metres - that'll give me a skirt or pants. 3 metres of blouse weight will give me a sleeved blouse or tunic too.
If it screams "outfit" or "dress" I'll buy 5.

what if the hokey-pokey really IS what it's all about?

Tina, if it is higher priced, I buy enough to make a specific garment/garments.
If it is on sale I buy min. 2 metres, often 3 metres and sometimes 5 metres. 3 metres will get me a jacket and pants or skirt.
I check my favourite patterns and note the amount required and keep a mental list of metres for each garment type.

Tina,
Generally I buy 3 - 5 metres ... top, pants, skirt (though I don't ever wear skirts these days
), but if it's black pants weight then I get 10m (I have to wear black pants for work)

I'm in the 3-5 range too. Then again, I bought 20 yards of corduroy on eBay because it was my daughter's favorite color (well, and the auction was for 20 yards (not a per yard auction), and it was pretty inexpensive). I still need to find something to do with it. Maybe a comforter for her room, with some curtains, a matching dress.....
Anyway, I definitely keep to the 3-5 area these days. My usual dress pattern calls for about 4 1/2 yards (I've squeezed it out of less, of course), so it's a good number.

I rarely buy less than 3 yards. 3 gets me a full dress, or a skirt and top, top and pants. And usually leaves just enough to make little dd a top or shorts. So, I get my use out of it. I always buy on sale and to get the most out of my bargain I think its best to buy 3 to 4 yards.

If I think I want to make a top out of it, I buy 1-1.5 yards, depending on whether I'll want short or long sleeves. If it's for a skirt or pants, I get 1-2 yards (2 if it's 45", 1 if it's 60"). For a dress, I'll get 2 yards.
