Im new to sewing and have completed a few jeans patterns but what i really want is an outside flat felled seam, making the seam isnt the part im concerned with, it's whats the best order to go at this when putting jeans together.

My idea without testing was to make the seam with a flat fell foot stitching outside seams front and back legs right side. then go from there, will i run into any problems going this route? or is there an easier way?

Just curious before i dive into this and have to seam rip it all apart, as there is no information i can find on this subject.

Thanks for any replies, and love the forums.

I did a flat-felled side seam with Thread Theory's Jutlands. Order on instruction sheet: curved front pockets, back darts, back pockets, flat-felled side seams, cargo pockets, inseams, seat seam, fly, belt loops, waistband, hem. No reason you can't do back darts and back pockets after the side seam. Depending on the type of front pocket, they might need to be done before the side seams. But I'm guessing you probably did the front pockets already if the pocket facing forms part of the side seam.

I use the commercial sewing order described here by Linda S.

Unless I'm missing something, it's the same order as before, just the flat felling goes on the outside.

yeah its still kinda confusing to me but im getting my head wrapped around this lol. My concern with using a felling foot is the pockets, can i run the edges through a felling foot?

I'm not sure, I've never used a foot to flat fell, I always do it by hand.

Btw, I'm not sure how you were planning on doing it, but the only part of the pockets in the flat felling will be the seam allowances. The flat felling should go in the direction of the back of the pants. Whether or not all that bulk will go through your foot is another story.

Thanks, so im not as lost as i thought i was lol.

Long flat felled seams by hand seem like a crooked mess waiting to happen for me lol.

Some well-placed seam grading on the pocket edges will help with the "hump jumping".
