If I have already asked this, I apologize for asking again. I am planning to buy a juki 654 serger and a brother coverstitch machine. If I use the serger to attach a neckband to a knit top, can I then use a chainstitch on the coverstich machine to topstitch the neckband. I'm trying to avoid having to use,my sewing machine when doing a topstitch. Thanks

Yes, though it looks a little funny to me, at least with the chain to the outside.

What's going on with the sewing machine that makes you want to not use it on knits?

You could use a chainstitch but why not use the regular coverstitch to topstitch?

Why not make samples to see what you like best?

Can you make a single line of stitching with a cover stitch. I want to mimic RTW neckband and topstitching like it has been done on this t-shirt.

I just realized that I don't know how to upload a photo. It is a crewneck tshirt with a neckband and a single line of what I am calling a topstitch. Maybe I should be calling it a coverstitch.

After a great deal of practice playing with the tension, foot pressure, stitch width and length, and types of needles, I can finally sew an acceptable seam without using a walking foot. But the neckband is a challenge. It gets stretched out when I try doing a topstitch on the right side of the garment. I was just wondering if down the line when I buy a coverstitch machine, can I do a single row of stitching to hold down a neckband to keep it from flopping out.

All the tshirts I have have two rows around the neckband. My coverstitch has a narrow 2 needle, a wide 2 needle and 3 needles. It takes some practice to get it right. If you didn't want the second row to show, I think you probably could stitch one line in the ditch. I actually prefer to use the sewing machine as I need alot more practice using the coverstitch around the neck band.
On a side note, the recent Threads issue discussed how to use a twin needle to make decorative stitching on knits and using some of the decorative stitches. I am not that adventurous-lol
