Okay, after seeing this question come up over and over again I thought I would capture a quick video on the subject.

Here is the Link to the Video

I've only owned janome or bernina overlock machines that take the standard 130/705 needles.
I've only ever used ball point or stretch needles as my most common fabric are knits, but on those occasions when I've sewn with a woven I use sharps.
I change my needles to suit the fabric just as I do on my flat machine.

I have just perched a new machine that take ELx705, the first thing I did was make sure I could get ball point.

My aunt is a Viking/Pfaff dealer, and the most knowledgeable SM guru I know. I asked her this question, and she said absolutely!

Thanks for yet another great video tutorial. I realize the Mic can intensify the sound of the machine in operation. My machine is loud without a Mic! I found if I place a folded piece of mesh shelf liner under my machine it helps muffle the noise...,be careful no vents are comprised.

Again, thanks for sharing!

I just learned from This That the ELx705 is already a light ball point, if that helps.

It depends on the machine. My Huskylock 936 used the standard Schmetz needles, same as my sewing machine. I could use universal, ball point, stretch, etc. depending on fabric.

However, my Babylock Evolution requires the ELX705 needles which don't come in different types other than choice of size 90/14 or 80/12. These needles have a ball point and a chrome finish that aids in slipping through fabric, and are purported to work with all fabrics.

It took me a while to get comfortable with not changing out my needles for different fabric types, but I've had great results and it certainly is more convenient. Too bad I already have a lifetime supply of the standard needles stockpiled... At least I can use them in my sewing machine.
