Today was hot, I mean Texas in June hot. I had run errands all day and was on my way home. I started hearing a funny noise and pulled over. I had a flat and the tire was falling apart. First I thought I'd try to ease it on home because it was only about another mile. Nope. Then I thought "why worry, I've got roadside assistance on my insurance". So I called them, and the eta was 90 minutes. (remember it's 95 out) So I called my son, no answer, got a text he's 2 hours away. Called my husband, no answer. (turns out he dropped his phone on a dirt road, found it later)
Meanwhile, cars are passing but nobody I know. Then a Texas State Trooper passes....and keeps going.
A few minutes later he comes back the other way and stops. He didn't see me the first time. This kind well-mannered officer changes my tire and then we find out the spare is almost flat. He follows me as I try to make it home, but after a short distance I give up and pull over. He gave me a ride home, and made sure I got inside safely.
I know we all gripe if we get pulled over, but I was sure happy to see the red and blue flashing lights today!!

Cheryl, you made my day.

And it's not just because I'm a Texan and can picture it. Let's hear it for those in uniform.

Awww, this is such a nice story. Reminds me of one time when my mom and I had a flat tire in the pouring rain and a nice NC State Highway Patrolman stopped and changed our tire for us. It was just a really nice thing for him to do for two gals out in the middle of nowhere. I'm glad that this trooper stopped for you and made sure you got home safe. :-)

Love this story! I grew up being told, "Police officers are your friend and are there to help you." It's not the easiest job to have, but I feel better knowing they're out there. I'm also glad you were safe and sound on that highway, in that kind of heat!

The local police do that at Santa Rosa Beach, Florida too. I heard some locals discussing it as they said they heard some complain sarcastically ("Why are they changing tires when they could be chasing people off the "private" beaches?"). One commented it's more than a courtesy. Helping a stranded motorist get on their way keeps the roads safer for everyone.

Thank you for posting this.
People forget that for every police "problem" story reported, there are thousands of these stories.
And it isn't just about the heat, it is scary/dangerous for a woman to be stranded alone on a roadside. That scenario is even dangerous for men.
As the daughter of a police officer, I have come to realize that those who are so openly critical of law enforcement usually lack in the morals and ethics department themselves - regardless of their station in life. For instance, I would expect a high rate of marital and tax cheating among those mentioned in the above scenario where they complained the officers should waste their time policing private beaches instead of assisting the public. The attitudes and the offenses go hand in hand.
I know there are bad police officers, no one resents them more than I, but I also know most police officers are severely underpaid, hardworking people that should be held to a higher standard when called for. Protecting their own lives and the lives of the general public is however paramount.

I'm glad his route came back and he helped you out....And that you had a spare tire. It seems like some new cars are coming out without one. I hope it's not a trend that spreads.
Maybe we all should add check the spare tire pressure to our to-do-soon lists...that one is SO easy to overlook. I know I don't, and now that I think about it, I don't know that it's checked where I get the oil changed either.

Lots of new cars don't have a spare. The extra weight is bad for gas mileage. EPA wants new cars to get better gas mileage, so this is one thing car makers are doing to follow the guidelines.
