Searching for a needle tip (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 11/7/20 4:46 AM ET
I've started sewing with the wrong foot (I had thought the machine wasn't supposed to stitch with the wrong foot attached 0- but anyway) & I broke a needle.
The tip has fallen beneath the plate and I can't see where it's landed.
Does anyone know how to dig around beneath the plate?
I don't want to keep going until I find it in case I damage the machine.
Thank you

I'm not familiar with your 7M sewing machine.
I have a telescopic magnet in my own toolbox in my sewing room. I used it when a needle broke. Once I couldn't find a needle tip. It was stuck with the thread in the needle eye on the underside of the fabric. I also have a flashlight with a telescopic magnet I never used.

Turn to the section on maintenance, towards the end of the manual, and go through the section on "cleaning the hook" -- most of the time I find needle shards in and/or under the bobbin case, though I have not tried this model.
Looks like a nice machine, from reading the manual.

Vacuum it out? That's what I do for lint removal.

I second the magnet as it's the best way to attract the piece of metal without being invasive. I use a telescopic magnet from an auto supply. The last time I had to do this, not only did I manage to get the needle tip, but also a full size plastic head pin. Oh, the shame of it all.

I don’t know your machine but I’ve accidentally dropped more than one needle down into the innards of assorted machines and often found them simply by removing the machine’s bottom cover. They often fall straight through the workings. My serger even has a little pull out tray that the needles land on when they slip. No idea if that’s what the tray is for but it works.

Ditto, check the fabric, then remove the bottom of machine
Most of the time, find in the fabric still threaded.

This happened to me yesterday on my Bernina 435. First I used a magnet, but that didn’t get it. Then I used my sewing machine vacuum. I didn’t see or hear anything above the vacuum screech. But, when I opened up the dust bin, there was the bottom of the broken needle. The machine sewed perfectly the rest of the day.

Thank you for all your tips. This happened to me also on my Bernina 765. Phew!
